View Full Version : 84-85 Tecate white plastic... Has arrived!

I was contacted by dcreel about front and rear, 84-85 Tecate white fenders. Maier discontinued these, but they said they would pull the mold out and do this order for us.

When I called on these, they said since they don't even offer these anymore, they need at least 10. I did some haggling (since we are also doing the carbon fiber 250R stuff) they agreed to do them if we can get at least 5 and order them at the same time as the carbon fiber 250R items.
They said the more the better, and the more we can get the faster they will get them out to us.

So if any of you would like white fenders for your Tecate, please start a list and as others sign up, copy and paste the list in your post.

Retail pricing "was" ...Front - $81.00 and rear - $179.00 plus shipping (probably $40-45) so right around $300

I can get them shipped to me, and then shipped to the buyer for $270.00 a set (front and rear) in lower 48.

I would like to add a deadline for both this order, and the 250R order. I was thinking around July 6th.

Green fenders may be more appealing to a larger group of potential buyers. White is kind of a niche color, that makes color matching more difficult and far from the classic kawasaki colors. I'm not poo-hooing white, but green may get results quicker for people not wanting to do a custom colored machine.........that's all.

Well I have had a set of the white Maire fenders in "stash" for quite awhile now and plan on using them for the 85 T-3 project I am working on.
I thought I would finally open them up and let those of you that perhaps can't envision quite what the white ones would look like,,, they are very nice.
If I was a better picture taker, you would be able to see how shiny they are.
My build will be white fenders with green tank cover (with several green/white accents on parts I make).
Soooo, my ultra rare white NEW Maire fenders might not be so ultra rare in the near future ,,, bummer eh :)
They are very nice and from the prices posted, a sound investment IMO.

I agree with John,to me the white with green tank is sharp looking, please order me 3 sets(front and rear) please.I ALSO THINK A GREEN NUMBER PLATE from DC PLASTICS would really knock the fellas socks off.Can I pay via Paypal Mrs Mosh? Also, how my seats coming? got any news for me by chance?I got fresh fenders waiting for a least one of them-LOL!!!!

dcreel

I have to agree, the white plastics matches way more color schemes than the green or red fenders. The real catch is Clarke and their tanks.. that will open up way more options for color combos. We can finally get moving on our pink Tecate build.

I can't say if there will any future runs of these. You do have a little time before I will be asking for any payments.
I will suggest to them that they should hold onto those molds.

Since we have enough people on the list to get the order, and it doesn't look anyone else wants in on it, I am going to start contacting people about payment.

I would like for everyone to have their payment into me by July 3rd. So if anyone else wants plastic, please be signed up and paid by July 3rd.
I will then place the order on Tuesday July 6th.

I will keep this thread updated with who has paid. Thanks to everyone who got in on this. Yet another group buy by the people of this community!

Was the order placed last week.....Just curious when Christmas is coming this year....lol

Maier said they would do less order numbers if I paced both this order, and the carbon fiber at the same time. I had a few members ask if they can pay a little past the deadline. I said yes, because I don't want anyone left out. The order deadline was rather short, and a lot of people were at TF when we were really talking about these orders. So it is only fair to extend it a litle longer.

So the update is...the order is pushed back a couple weeks. I want to have the order placed before the end of this month. As soon as all the payments are in I will place the order and post up as soon as it is placed.

The plastics have arrived. I will be shipping them out this week, and probably part of next week. Bear with me on the shipping, a lot of fenders going out. All this carbon fiber, and the Tecate stuff at the same time.
I had to order boxes due to the size. It was kinda hard finding them to fit the rears. All I could find was a little big, so I will have to cut down each box, so that will take a little time.

Thanks again to EVERYONE who joined in on this order!

Here are a few pics to look at while you wait for your package to arrive...I couldn't fit all the plastics in the pics...a lot of plastic!

Or a group buy on green or black fenders. I prefer the green on ones (love Kawasaki colors), since they discontinued them just as I finally get a Tecate. But with 2 Tecates now, the current greens will do, and black would look nice for a change, not too many black out there.:naughty::Bounce:drool:

I got mine down from the rafters today and mounted them up.
I took some pictures as i went along and hope you all don't mind me posting up as how I do mine.
I used my red set of Maire T-3 plastics as a guide. The front fender has the dimples on where to drill holes and after using my red front fender as a guide, the dimples that Maire put on the front fender is dead on with where the bolts will go.
You can get by with a smaller bit then 3/8ths. bit I used I but I don't like fighting with a hole for alignment so slightly over sized allows for some adjustment. The 5/8ths butter fly bit fits my grommets well. just be sure to bevel the edge or it really makes it difficult to get the rear rubber grommet installed.
The back fenders are what test your confidence level IMO and can be easily marked out by just putting them on the machine where you want them and mark the drill holes up threw the mounting holes but I choose to again use mt red rear fenders as a guide but you need to figure a slight off set too just because they won't exactly fit together real tight, or at least I did not want to push them together that tight to avoid scratching my white plastics.
I prefer to use a metal blade in the jigsaw because it will not grab and gouge the plastics and also gives a much smoother cut so you have less trimming for smoothness.
One more thing I would like to add that you might not be aware of is that if you decide to remove the Maire decal or warning decal, DO NOT USE goo-be-gone or similar stuff on the glue residue that will be left on the plastics. Using the goo-be-gone stuff WILL take the shine OFF the plastics quicker then you can say "OH CRAP".
W.D.40 or similar works just fine to remove the glue goo or any pencil or marker lines.
Any body else have helpful hints or tricks you use ???

"250" decals like I used on my red T-3. She copied the size of the tank (84 style) + fender decals to o.e.m. size from a original set i took off of some green o.e.m. plastics.
i ain't sure if I want black or green for my build ,,,, decide that in the morning but I will get you guys price tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips John, I just got in from the garage trying to size the rear fenders up. The issue I'm having is that the rear downward slope of the fender is hitting my PRM grab bar. I have to mush the plastic down for it to sit tight to the frame mounts. My question is, I'm missing the fender support bar, is this what is causing my issue? Does the fender support bar mount to the frame and the fenders on top of the bar?

jeswinehart
09-17-2010, 10:31 PM
Mike I think the fender support probably will add to your having to mush the rear part of the plastics down even more IMO.
I have not put mine on yet (grab bar paint still curing) but on a test fit I just did it is going to raise the rear of my plastics a smidgen.

Gag_Halfront
09-18-2010, 12:01 AM
I just finished installing mine. here's my $.02

Fender support bar: remove it. It doesn't work with these fenders. It doesn't let them sit down on the frame like they need to. I had to take mine off. I kept it though because I plan on running OEMs for racing.

Grab bar: No interference with OEM grab bar

Fittment: If you don't have old maier plastics to use as a pattern like Mr. Swinehart did, here's what you do. First place the fenders on the bike (fender brace removed). Next, remove the latch from your seat and put the seat on the bike on top of your fenders. This is important because the seat determines everything about how the fenders line up. If you drill holes and bolt the fenders down first, then try to fit the seat, there's a good chance it won't fit together right.

Now, once the seat is test fit on top of the fenders and you're happy that it's basically straight, mark the front bolt holes from the bottom, remove the fenders and drill these holes. Put the fenders back on and install the front two bolts. Put the latch back on your seat and mark around the hooks in the forward and rearward positions to figure out where to cut the slots. You won't make them long enough the first try so be patient and be prepared to make the slots bigger if necessary. Look at John's pictures and you can see how far back the slots come. This was surprising to me and didn't seem right but it was the only way to make it work. Seeing his, I'm sure this is how it's actually supposed to be. It just seemed awkward. There's really no good way to properly locate the rear holes. You can't mark them from the bottom and there are no good reference points from the top. If you pull the grommets out of your OEMs you'll notice that the holes are oblong to allow for adjustment. This is a good thing. I got pretty close with my holes (there are very slight dimples on the back where the holes are supposed to be) but it wasn't perfect. When i saw how much bigger than necessary the OEM holes were I didn't feel so bad. :-) Honestly, if you install the grommets upside down, the extra thickness on the bottom is enough that the seat holds the plastics down pretty tight and you could probably get away without putting the bolts in at all. then they only need to be close enough to sit on the right part of the frame.

For elongating the holes after drilling the pilots, I used a bit on my dremel that looks sort of like a really aggressive drill bit. I don't know what it's called, but it's made for this sort of thing and worked great. It's sort of like a roto zip bit for the dremel.

With any luck, I'll be posting pics tomorrow of my new white Tecate. My tank is just a crappy Krylon Fusion rattle can job on an old spare tank I had laying around. it won't look good for long (maybe it won't look good _ever_) but it'll do long enough for me to save up and order a white Clarke.

Here she is. I still need to do the radiator guard and headlight bracket but they'll be white as well (at least for now).

I got my 250 decals today. Not bad since it was Tuesday i called my gal. 10 dollars a set.
Got another board member a set for his build (can you guess who the pink ones are going too :)
I gotta admit, I think she used some old stock material because it was very tuff getting clear faced part to peel off w/o lifting the decals them selves off. Maybe since they are so small ,,,don't know but I got them on with out screwing them up.
i think I am gonna see what she can come with for "TECATE" for the back.

My decal gal copied the style of logo I have on my Red rider T-3 for me to use on the rear of the white build.

I like it.

I know I am a little late on the thread but since I am new here is there a way to get in on the white plastic?

The white plastic run is done. All have been bought, built, and shipped I think. There is talk of putting together another order in the near future for black or green so keep a lookout.

Join the tecate group too if you haven't.
