My 250r was bogging just before the powerband, started tearing it down and found this. Maybe it's all or at least part of the problem. What do yall think?

that would definitely cause it to bog

Just think, your engine ate the piece that is missing.

I wonder what that little piece will do to your crank bearings n at.

I'd bet it'll be OK. I'm guessing they make reeds out of a material that will hopefully not damage anything internal too much. Now that I think of it, I remember seeing some old machine (can't remember what it was) with steel reeds. Betcha she wouldn't chew those up!

i dont think the steel ones would break off like that. at least hopefully not.

Dropped off the cylinder off at the machine shop today, gonna do a topend rebuild but I'm going to leave the bottom end alone not enough confidence for that. The reeds are made out of a paper thin fiberglass or plastic guess they been in there since new. Hopefully It'll be o.k. I don't really ride them much anyway.

most likely carbon fiber

make sure they check flatness of the head and deck, I almos tlost an engine due to a little warping on the deck, coolant leaked into the jug.

The reeds mainly affect idle/low end. Considering the large volume of air the piston moves, and the large crankcase volume, that small piece missing wont make a huge difference.

i respectfully disagree, reeds open with each intake pulse, and close when the intake pulse stops, no matter what RPM. they just open a small amount at low RPM when intake volume is low, and open farther as RPM/intake volume increases...broken reed petal=not good all-round.

but absolutely agree on checking for warpage while its apart.......

The original reeds in the early R's were steel. The changed them to fiber for that reason that if they broke they wouldn't do damage.
