hello all, im a newbie to the site and I respectfully ask for the experts advice.I recently aquired a 1981 250R from a friend that didnt know what it was.I got it for 75 dollars, but it was in boxes and didnt know if it ran.Well, it turns out sombody cut a wire to the cdi box so i fixed that and wow it ran! Then I put a 200X front end on wich was a very easy swap.I like the look plus bigger front brake too. Then I rode this thing.HOLY CRAP!!! this thing is scary fast! Makes my old reliable 250sx feel like a slug.Anyway I would like to know if this thing is worth putting a ton of money into or am I trying to polish a turd.

welcome to the site. first off i would like to say nice 250r. and second if i was you i would put as much money in to that as you feel necessary. if you have any questions about your trikes post them here and almost every question will get answered in under an hour.
Umm for 75 bucks and it runs good? You scored..
I dont know what your financial place is, but I dont think you would be hurting yourself to dump up to 3-500 in that machine. Honestly, it does not look like it needs all that much.
Welcome to the site!

Ill buy it from you for $100 right now! lol, jk. you definately got a good buy on a seemingly well preserved classic. is it a gen 3 R? no, but its DEFINATELY not a turd!

thankyou for taking the time to respond. My concern is that I will have more money tied up in this thing than its worth.I didnt mention that I was missing a LOT of parts meaning brake drum, brakehub brake cable, clutch perch and cable, sprockets andchain and the list goes on.This is turning into a restoration as you all know these things can quickly get out of hand.Anybody out there have a good clutch basket? Thankyou again for your time

You will never get back what you put into it financially just like anything else. You will get back what you put into it if you measure the smile on your face and enjoy the stares you get from passer bys and people on quads and bikes. Worth every penny in my book.

Agree 100%^^^^
That is a great score. It is far from a turd and well worth fixing up for yourself. You can't allow resale value interrupt your build. If you get caught up in the value at the end, you will lose focus and give up. It has to be for you and your enjoyment if you want the full potential. Good luck with it.

250r's are MORE than worth putting the cash into. An air cooled R in good condition you could find for ~6-800 in good condition like that. Well worth keeping and dumping money into IMO.

for 75 bucks and its a runner clean it and keep it a runner not a show queen .jmo but there is nothing like it when a rider is riding a newer quad or bike and you are running with them or beating them on a 20 yr old plus machine .and they are diffent and i like to be diffrent
