picked up an 84 atc70 . from a guy cleaning out a garage.

its all complete but needs a restoration . its a bit rusty has one flat . but its totally saveable with some powder coating and maby even a lifan .

anyway I'm not looking to start this project right away and I'm trying to get it running to messaround on .

the problem is it has spark that comes and goes . I had it fired up for about 20 seconds.

what would cause that ? I cleaned the points and flywheel .

thanks for anyhelp !

ill ppost some pictures soon

Check the ground, it may not be as good, specially if it's rusty. It could also be the points. Hope you get it to run soon.

well i got it running and it was a ground issue thanks .

issue number 2 is it backfires . and shifts into gear but dosent move . it creeps very slowly and the engine bogs down ?

clutch or centrifical clutch ?

try adjusting the clutch, and for the back fire, make sure you exhaust isn't plugged

it seems to rev up fine in neutral other then the backfireing

could it be the timing? that would explain the backfire and no power. jim

would worn out points even when set to proper gap cause it to be out of time ?

Nice score, fenders look great!

As for your problems, it could be anything from a plugged up exhaust, a fouled spark plug, or even a dirty carburetor. I would take the exhaust off and swap it for something else if possible, swap in a new plug, and take the carb off and really thoroughly clean it. My 200x was backfiring pretty badly when I let off the throttle, so I cleaned out the carb, and put a new plug in, and it's running like new :)

That would also be a great project too. A little polish, maybe some sandblasting and powdercoating, and it'll be a sweet ride

It's going to be hard to kill that engine......

The carby more than likely needs a clean and filters on the fuel lines wouldn't be a bad idea as the tanks are quite often full of rust. New points and condenser would be a good idea to as worn points can cause the timing to be out even when set to the correct gap

i cleaned the carb and put a fresh plug in . im thinking its the points also.

i wasnt going to start this project soon. but after lookin at some piks on hondaatc70.com i think its time to get the project rolling. :naughty:

the only parts too far gone are the brake hub covers , chain cover and the axle is too far pitted to make pretty again.

short list . powder coat frame and fork (oem colors) . chrome all the chrome . complete sticker kit . douglass rims and holeshot tires . big bore kit . :naughty: maby a blue honda 70 seat cover .

anyone have any feedback on this kit ?

For that kind of money for a stroker kit, I would think about pulling that motor out and throwing a lifan in... Dont have to beat that little honda motor, and when the lifan is dead, throw it away and put the 70cc back in... (just me though)

what's the going rate for a 140cc lifan ?

I seen a web site with one for 400 ?

that's pretty cheap. I would defenetly get one of those over a kit

Wholesale cycle in Ohio had Piranha 140's for $330 shipped with wiring and electrical. I don't see them on their site right now though so you may have to contact them. Mine runs great.

Check the valve clearance, a valve not seating fully would make it "backfire". Usually a leaky intake will cause it too pop through the carb, exhaust leaking pops through muffler. As for timing and spark issues, just go to the nearest lawn mower shop and get a little single cylinder points conversion module. Can't think of the name of it right now, but they're only about $15. Usually you can get those little 70's running well for cheap. I'd try that before swapping engines.

The Piranha 140 I was told is a better engine then the lifan 140. Mine was 330 to the door with carb and all electronics. It's didn't even require the carb to be tuned very much.
