I use steel wool (fine) and some chrome polish for lube then buff off the haze when your done. Usually works pretty good.

Steel wool tripple 000 is what I like to use with a little dish soap as a lube .

The best way to clean up chrome is spoke acid. It was origionally made for chrome wire spoke wheels on old low riders ond other cars. Before the advent of spoke acid the only way to polish the wire chrome wheels was to use a shoelace dunked in chrome polish, wrap it once around a spoke and go back and fourth on each individual spoke to get all of them polished. Needless to say acids are a great chemical. You can get it at almost any auto parts store. There are 2 main types of wheel acids. 1 is the chrome/spoke acid, the other is for alumminum. Dont use them interchangably. The chrome/spoke acid is amazing on chrome, all chrome. Just spray on some acid, if you have rust, a few light swipes with some steel whool and your good, just hose it off. Works really well on your chrome wheels on your car too, no hard work, no buffing or anything. I used to work as a detailer, you can just spray the acid on the chrome wheels one at a time. By the time you get done with the last wheel its time to start spraying the first off with a pressure washer, they always come out looking new. The foaming alumminum acid, also found in the wheel section of auto parts stores is made for cast alumminum wheels. Works well for that, but also works well to detail your motor. Lots of guys use oven cleaner, most of which contain sodium hydroxide (Lye) which is a base, it makes the alumminum dark usually. The Foaming alumminum acid cleans the surface, can help remove some oil and grease stains and makes the alumminum bright looking again. Even cleans up the edges of the gaskets making them look new as well. The best part is that both acids will help clean the paint on the frame, removes all the contaminants that make the frame look dull and dingy, even when soap and water wont get it off, the acid will. All the acids are different, and work differently on the different metals, just dont confuse them and inter-use them. Use each one for its intended purpouse and you will be fine. Dont let them sit on the surfaces too long either, or obviously get them on the plastics, they will leave stains. When used properly, these chemicals will get the detail that you cant get with buffers, brushes or anything else for that matter.

atctim is spot on.. get the sos pads that are blue, they have the built in soap. Have been using them on our show trucks for years. Pipes, wheels etc. Also if you can find some polish that is made by Extreme it works great. it comes in a black can and it is has some sort of fiber that has polish built in it. I have a 24 inch bumper on my KW and it takes no time to make it shine.

The real way to decide what steel wool is how crusty is the rusty. The more rust the heavy steel wool. Nice chrome with a light rust start with the lightest stuff. For small areas on handle bars and rear racks at the welds you can get a tiny wire wheel for a Dremel type tool that works great and really speeds up getting the rust out of the tight areas. Then polish it up good.
