Hello new here, and i am lloking into my first 3 wheeler for trapping. It's a 1983 Yamaha Tri-moto 175 i may be purchasing for 300 canadian. My issue with it is that it does not move...it runs but it won't move.

I would assume that it has a chain and the rear axle bearings are still good, And the current owner says it is the gears screwed up but i wanna know the possibility for worst case scenarios.

Clutch, drive gears

What is required for changing the gears, and how much would it cost.
if the cluch is gone how can i tell and is it worth buying???

Thanks, Trevor

Personally, i would rather do anything else on a trike other than the transmission. That is just me though.

does it take long to change the gears, expensive.......or just really detailed.

The other question is do i have to split the crank??? I've done it with a 4 wheeler in my schools autoshop but i wouldn't think of doing it at my own shop.

You don't have to split the crank. You do have to split the cases though, and that's no picnic for a lot of us. If you've never done it before it can be a tough job. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you've never done it before.

$300 is steep for a trike that doesn't move. Transmissions are no cake walk. Even with a manual is can be a chore. I would recommend dropping $500-600 on a functional trike. You will have that much in purchase price and parts alone in the 175.

Unless its in really mint shape other than the bottom end, Id offer him 50 bucks if he doesnt take it, theres lots of good deals out there. try kijiji

I agree I found my 175 on kijiji for a case of beer total price = $47.50 canadian

it needs a new head and piston but other then that everything else is in order so I would just tell them "here is my offer $50 bucks, here is my phone number, and call me when nobody wants it"

cause like stated I even feel thats a bit steep since a nice running one around me goes for 5-800
so check your options and search around something is bound to come up.... im still waiting for my 6x6x6 to pop up on a few sites it will eventually but till then im content with waiting.

a good deal will hit you eventually but i would probably not go for that unit for $300

Thanks for all of the replies, i am going to take D-dub and Scrodamon\s responces and offer him $75, but other than that i found a trimoto 200 far from mint, and the reverse doesnt work, and the motor isn't great but it runs and moves which is all i need for now He wants 300 i'll give him 250.

I don't really need revers and if it's easy to start and could get my traps in and out of the bush im happy.

I went and saw the 200 and WOW was it a peiceof work!!!!! needless to say i left it there. My small mind flipped back to the first bike and i got talking to the owner and he told me he was riding it around and a stick got jamed up in the sprocket and it stoped moving........... thinking afterwards is there a shear pin on the sproket or inside the motor somewhere.

Im going to see the bike tomorrow can i get some things to look for.

Thanks Trevor.

I got a different one.....i traded a 6 hp johnson outboard for a 198? 175 trimoto. He has alwase premixing the oil, and has not been used mush i am the 3rd owner of the bike!!! \it funs not bad needs a tune up, but is extremely hard to start and bogs out when driving after about 30 seconds.....i think i have to clean the carb and im going to put a carb kit in in.

will hopefully have pics soon
