I got a basket case YTM225 last week. It is semi complete except that the top end of the engine was torn apart due to bad rings (no compression). The owner took it apart and then just kind of forgot about it.

Anyway, I'm redoing the top end right now, I rebuilt the carb, and I will hopefully be putting it back together by the end of the week.

However I stupidilty never checked to see if the bottom end was free. I can't pull the pull starter, seems like its frozen in place.

However the case was open to the elements and I'm assuming that its got surface rust or something inside. I want to free it up so I can put the engine back together. What is the best way of freeing up the bottom end of the 225 engine?

well is it still open? if so I would try to spray some lube or something in the motor or let the engine soak in lube.

Yes, I did spray it down. I just don't want to break the pull starter by pulling hard on it. I'm trying to figure out a good way of breaking it free.

I'm an idiot. I went outside in the dark and took the pull starter off. Put my ratchet and socket on it and proceeded to turn it with no problem other than the whole trike was moving as well. I had it in gear. Doh.

Well in my defense, the trike was missing the shifter lever so I wasn't sure what gear it was in.
