View Full Version : What to check on bottom end of air cooled R before doing top end?

I have an 82 250r. I wanted to put my CR480 engine in it, but decided it might be better to get some experience on a stock 2 stroke trike first. Need a piston. didn't come with one.

Now what should I check for on the bottom end to make sure everything works? I know I can check the clutch, and then every gear to see if it doesn't roll, and then rolls with the clutch cable pulled in.

Want to repaint frame, engine, and replace axle and swingarm bearings.

Is there anyway to check everything out in the bottom end? It was stored outdoors for years with no top end, filled with oil and covered decently (bottom end). I was going to pull the engine and flush with Kerosene. Not sure what else to check???

Also, would a CR480 carb work fine with a stock 250R engine?

Thanks

As long as all the gears seem to work OK I would run it. You're going to want a 34-36mm carb for that.

You can pull the stator and check for any up and down play - ANY! and if you want piece of mind, pull the clutch out (inspect that while it's out) and use the countershaft to run through all the gears. You can also check for main bearing play on the primary gear side too.

Main bearings in a 2 stroke don't like to sit, they aren't bathed in oil like a thumper.........
