Here it is, as I brought it home. Day 1 $130 1984 ATC that had been left and forgotten.

I hosed it off and brought it in. I pulled the rear fender to wash it and the gas tank was full of rusty water, so I took it off too.

I checked for spark, which looked good and not having a compression tester small enough for the engine. I put the plug back in, sprayed some starting fluid into the carb and gave it a kick. Nothing......
I went the next day and got a compression tester that fit and was getting 50-60psi. I had already downloaded the manual here and 60psi isn't enough. Still hoping I'd get lucking and find something easier to fix, I checked the valves, cam and timing. Everything seemed to be in order. A friend suggested that I put some oil in the cylinder and re-try the compression test. If it increases the pressure the definably rings. I did and it did, up to 125psi and tear down it was. Unlike my KX's, I couldn't get the head off with the engine is. If there is a way and I just didn't figure it out, LMK. Everything came apart good, I followed directions from the manual (this is the first time I've ever rebuilt and engine myself, at least one with valves) and I don't want to mess anything up. I've been around allot of engines being build but watching and doing is a big difference. Everything looked good, some wear in the cam, rockers and where the cam rides in the head but the piston and rings were done. Here's the pics of the engine stuff.

I took it everything to the machine shop to have everything checked. The cylinder cleaned up at .25mm over so I got a first bore standard compression piston kit and dropped it off today to have the piston the wall clearance and final hone. With that out of the way I was back home this weekend and ready to start the rest of tear down and start powder coating.

I did the frame yesterday and got to take some pictures today when I got home today. I started out wanting to restore this but the cost of restore quality used or OEM new parts would have lead to spending money that I would have to wait until I earned it to spend it. Then I thought of a color scheme that would be a show piece for my shop. Then I settled on do it and ride it ASAP. I have plenty extra mirror red on hand and it is a Honda, so close enough. If you haven't guess, I plan on this being a rider. So, I didn't go through the pains of working the metal. filling the rough places left by surface rust or filing off the welding splatter. It could have been done slicker but the rust is gone and the PC is trail worthy.
In the blaster, removing all the rust and paint.

here are the pictures of the cured frame. Sorry about the way the pictures glare. This stuff is pretty shinny and I'm just not much of a photographer. The color isn't a match for Honda red, but I plan on covering all that up with mud, lol.

And some of the hard to get to places that gives us powder coaters problems ( orange peel and incomplete coverage. Not real tight but limited gun movement means you have to float the powder in sometimes, lol. Still came out pretty slick. I do mostly car parts, this is just the 4th or 5th tube frame I've done.

I was going to do the swing arm today but can get the hub nut loose. And, how are ATV tires broken down? We always changed you dirt bike tires, sometimes on the trail but what about these? Should I take them to a regular tire store and let them try to get them off or just go into them with tire irons? I only have 6" tire irons that I carried on the trail in my fanny pack. What about breaking the bead on them? BIG HAMMER?

ive powdered wheels for a long time and you did a fantastic job on the hard to get places. i think it will hang ok for being a rider. good job. for breaking the bead you can take a hilift jack and set it at the bead and under a truck bumper or something. works great. theyre not that bad at all.

Nice job. Looking at my 84 200x, they sure don't knock themselves out at the Honda factory to make cosmetically nice looking welds. Obviously structurally good, but for appearance, yech.

Good job....To break the tires down i just remove the valve core, get a good board set it up on the tire near the bead like a ramp and run the jeep up on it.

I still haven't budged the swingarm bearings. I've got them soaking and I'll try again tomorrow night. I hope to finish the powder coating this weekend, finding some foot peg mounts. I'm thinking about doing the wheels in a flat black and a frame colored red stripe on the outer lip on gold hubs but silver wheels and swingarm then everything else satin black to simplify things sounds pretty good to. Any tricks to getting the swing arm bearings out without messing them up?
1 more thing, what oil should I use on the freshened up engine? I've always used OEM fluids, normally what the owners manual recommended.

Great work, and you are deffinatly a dedicated enthusiast! For the oil, you can do what the manual says, and run honda oil, or yamaha oil, or even the valvoline ATV 10w40 oil is great in a 200x, thats what I run. The vavoline is far cheaper than the others mentioned, and can be bought almost anywhere. For the bearrings - are you talking about the axle bearrings, or the bearrings in the front "piviot" section of the swingarm? It is really hard to get them out without hurting them. Its not a bad idea to replace them anyway, they are probly overdue. If you order the rear axle bearrings from a local bike shop that deals with parts unlimited, you can get them for $7 a piece, and the new seals are 2-3$ a piece. I use a large punch and medium size hammer, and wack them out. For the piviot bearrings, they cost at least $30+ for the bearrings, or you can replace them with a nylon/plastic style bushing offered by a member on here, and at 1/2 the price. This is the route I went, have been riding it hard for over a year, and no problems! The piviot bearrings are harder to remove. You can try to remove them with a punch, but might end up bringing it to a machine shop, as they can be near impossible to do without the right equipment (big drill bit and press). Good luck, and keep up the good work!

Thank's 69, I was hoping to save them. The axle bearings are shot, I'll have to replace them but the needle bearings were smooth and tight. I was hoping to reused them. I haven't tried anything but a drift and hammer. I've got a small shop press but haven't figured out how I could use it to press them out. My wife is a nurse and work 2nd shift Wednesdays and Thursdays, I have my 8 year old those nights and I don't get much done. I'll get them out tomorrow night. I tend to get lost in the shop on the nights when I don't have to get up early the next day. I'm hoping to try it out next weekend.

I took my swing arm to work with yesterday and took the bearings out there, an Oxy/Acetylene torch is allot different than a propane torch, lol. Welding and torches are a weak point for me. I started a welding class once but just wasn't interested in it and only started teaching myself welding in the last couple years and this was the first time I had used a torch solo. (side note) I've got to get me a torch set. Does anyone know anything about that set Harbor Freight sells? Would it be a usable addition or would I be better off finding a full sided use torch set up?
Good news, a buddy just stopped by and gave me a good set of straight foot pegs! He and his father were big into 3 wheeler racing back in the day and he's been hording up ATC 200x's for years now. I'll be able to work on the controls this weekend too. I group stuff together and do colors in batches and I now have everything that will get black powder. I tweaked my shoulder yesterday at work and I'm moving a little slow with what I was hoping to get done this weekend but I'll get done what gets done.

I didn't get the stock 200x rear wheels but after market or from something else steel wheels. I plan to buy OEM rears but later, so I was trying flat black with frame colored outer lip. I didn't like it, here's a couple pics. I mixed up a pearled up clear to change it around some. I'll leave them as they are til I can get the right set. I'm glad I didn't do the front, at least I don't have to strip these.

I wouldn't mind doing that for a set of aluminum but I pearled the up with an acrylic clear coat and now they turn purple in the sunlight. I'll try to get a picture of the effect, I'm not very good with a camera. What did you have in mind? I'm going to get a set of OEM's before I buy tires or buy them with tires and then I won't be using these. If you want these I'll let you get them, I'm sure there is something we could trade on. I still want to replace several things but I'm not going to spend any unnecessary money til I know how it rides. There could be allot of stuff wrong in the bottom end. It felt good but I want to ride it before I start buying non essentials.

I'm going to use the OEM for now. I'm been blasting on it and doing rust treatments, it was in bad shape- deeply pitted, and will pc it in high temp black. I have family who works for one of the after market exhaust makers, he's over the muffler plant, that is going to make me a pipe and silencer for it. It's high end stuff they make and WHEN he gets it done it will be really nice looking, polished SS, TIG welds and mandrel bends but when I'll get it? Who knows???? I need to check if they offer exhaust for any of the quads. Would any of the current quads that the muffler would preform well on the 200x?

I'm still working on the swing arm. It has the skid plate and mounts are bent and one is broken. I tried to straighten them back some tonight (and realized that the welder is out of wire). I got it looking like the mounts are back pretty close but I think the skid plate still needs work. I was going how I thought it should look, I don't have anything straight to go by. Does anyone know the dimension on the mounts? I was thinking about making something a little heavier duty, the best I could do straightening it and every angle looks different. Here's some pics.

you plan on rebuilding any other trikes after this one?

I didn't plan on this one, lol. This X is a long time dream and there isn't another bike like that. I have a couple things I would jump on if it was the right deal but don't plan on buying up random trikes just to have for parts later, but that could happen. If I had local people to ride with I'd likely at least be helping rebuild a few. I'm fortunate that I've got a roomy well equipped shop and group projects are normally done here, lol. If riding isn't a huge hassle I would like to have one around that my wife might ride some but like a 110 or 125 with a low range tranny. Something like that would be big enough for he but I could use the low range to get the kid started on trikes. A Big Red or 250es that me and the wife could share when the kid takes over the 110 or 125. I'm a big fan of team green, I think 86 Tecate 250 with green plastic, purple frame, seat cover, fork boots, flat black and polished here and there would be something I'd like to own. Or maybe some crazy power making big bore 250R, that would be fun.........Or is that how this whole thing starts? You start out with cheap riders then all of a sudden you're running your truck into a ditch on some back country road cause you heard someone saw a "green 3 wheeler" behind a barn "somewhere" out in there thinking it might be some long lost "works" Tecate 250 (replace works Tecate 250 with 58 VW convertible and it's a true story, LOL).
I want to finish this one first and go from there. I've had a history of unfinished project, one of which is funding this 200x. I'm waiting on some money to clear pay pal and then I'll get on the next round of ordering. Wheels, tires, brakes, chain and sprockets will come after bearings. Good handle bars and better switches, levers and perches, bark busters and lights. Last would be plastic and a seat cover. I've got a couple of big paying jobs in the coming weeks (out patient surgery tomorrow, that will slow me down for a couple days) and about $4K of car parts listed on CL and a couple of forums. I"ll buy thrike stuff as the money comes in from car parts. I've had allot of interest but money is tight everywhere and I'm just waiting for a couple people to get cash together. I've wanted this for a long time and I'm not going to sale it. I've seen some things I'd like to have listed here but I hate tire kickers. I don't bother someone until I have cash in hand to make and offer with. I'm waiting on a paypal transfer to clear for $450, That will go to the list, so it's just waiting til then. I'm seen sigs with people selling trike related stuff but never what I'm needing at the time. Any recommendations on where to buy some of this stuff, LMK. I normally just ebay everything. I can paypal, money order or cash face to face if locales allow.

I've mostly been trying to get an order list together and deciding what I need/want. Since I've decided to use the 8 in rears they needed to be redone and I found some places on the swing arm that needed to be welded. The engine wasn't ready when I went to pick it up, it looks like I'll have all the parts here to put it back together next weekend but I've thought that before. I messed with the brakes some and both master cylinders are shot. I'm not sure about the calipers. I have a couple master cylinders from the quad that I'm going to use to at least test the calipers. Here's some pics of the wheels, hubs and swingarm. I did the front oem aluminum wheel too so all the wheels would match. The boned chrome comes out of look like a nice polished aluminum, it's hard to tell the rears are steel. Anything was better than the pink/purple pearl, lol.

I got started putting the X back together today. I was hoping to have it rolling today but I forgot to order a chain tensioner and can't tighten up the swingarm til I get one. I got the tank treated/lined, mounted the tires, all the bearings in and it's starting to look like something. I put the forks in for the long wheel base but mounted the tire for short wheels base, I didn't know that was an option til tonight. The shorter will work better for me and changing the tubes is easier than turing that tire around. I hope to get a tensioner tomorrow and can get it down on the floor. The engine is ready to go back in but looks rough, I'll try to touch it up some. I'm really happy with everything so far. The wife doesn't like the gold but I like it and now that things are coming together I like it even better. I was over at a buddy's today and scored a like new OEM take tail light. Said he had taken it off a R he bought new and had been put up all that time.

It's really coming together well, make sure that you get some pics of it right when you finish it and not after you ride it lol.

It's a roller now !!!! I couldn't wait til Tuesday when the Honda shop was open to get a tensioner, so I made one and got something I can push :w00t: . I rolled it out in the yard and took a few pictures. I'm so happy with the way everything has come out so far. I'm going to try to get the engine dolled up and ready to go back in. It's taken my longer to do everything but I never meant to get this anal about it either but I'm loving it so far.

I'm planning black plastic with 250R front fender and headlight with red set cover and bar pad but I've got to ride it first. I want to make sure everything in the bottom end is good first (I believe it to be good). After a test ride, brakes and suspension is next. I need a rear master cylinder and I'll rebuild and PC everything while I have them apart. My controls are a little rough, I would like to find switches, levers and perches from something else that looked new, like maybe XR light switches and good perches/levers from a quad. Then the plastic and seat cover will be the icing, so too speak.

It's nothing to see. I build everything myself and I work with what I have, I'll cut cost when I can do it without cutting quality. My oven it 2' deep 4' wide and 6' high on the inside, the booth is 4' x 4' and 6' high with common heat pump filters and vented outside. The oven has good electronics, air flow and insulation and the booth has a dedicated ground rod with 6ga stranded copper wire connected to a swivel hanging bar. Both are pretty rough home made looking items but looks can fool you sometimes, lol. The frame is hanging in the booth I post something that's hanging in the oven. Are you into PC'ing or wanting to get into it? I've got book marks for lots on good info on the net, things like oven building and booth design, btu calculators and stuff. I don't know enough about it myself to be giving advice, a novice at best but any info I do have I'd be glad to share.

A little time, effort and paint can work wonders. I dug a 84 200X out of a shed and got it firing again. took about 7 carb cleanings, a brake system rebuild(master and caliper), new rear tires, fuel tank cleaning and a lot of grunt work.

I haven't gotten to work on the bike much in the last week, been busy at work, had school stuff for the kid and trying to get a buddy's car finished up and out of my shop. I did finally get the engine painted ( I don't really like engine work so I had it rebuilt at the shop and since the cases weren't split I wasn't going to be able to PC all of it ) I used some epoxy paint that I've used on guns for years. It should stand up to the heat, but who knows. I used it because it adheres to aluminum very well but time will tell how it holds up on the engine. I'm polishing the fins as I get time and the castings were really rough, so it's taking some time to get it to look the way I want but here are some pics of as it sits now. I'll be PC'ing the filter cap and the rocker arm inspection covers silver gray and try to find a matching paint for the CDI box and I'm considering a SS engine fastener kit but would only replace the bottom end fasteners at this time because all the head/cylinder bolts were torqued at the engine shop and I don't want to undo anything that I know is right and risk messing something up, so the head bolts will remain black until it comes apart again (hopefully no time soon). I have the moshes making me a seat cover and bar pad in red vinyl with the name of my PC shop across the back and I put some pretty red grips on the bars this week, lol but that's about it at this time.

Thanks, I learned when I started working on guns that Dremels and die grinders can ruin parts quick and got in the habit of doing stuff like this by hand. Emery clothe and a file isn't the fastest way but I like the feel of doing things by hand. It's a little slower but the results almost always show in the end. I plan on having the engine in the chassis this week. I've got to get my shop cleaned out and I'm ridding myself of allot of baggage left from old hobby's to make room. I have bought an old ACT 185/200 (IDK) parts bike and a 200cc big red (I think) that I haven't brought home because I don't have room in the shop and I'll try to get the pics of the 225 I got last week up too soon. That makes 4 trikes and 2 bikes (86 XR and 86CR) that I've picked up in the last 6 weeks but only the 225 was complete and running. I'm still trying the get a running 110 I found but the guy just isn't coming off with it so far. I'm going to merge the XR and CR together with a water cooled Lifan 250cc 4 stroke to make a supermotard to ride to work next summer and try to get 3 nice running trikes together over the winter. The 200x for me, 225dx for the wife and I'm going to get that 110 before it's over for the boy but that's it. I'm not buying anything else until I get those done, unless I run up on a 250R, Tri-Z or Tecate or something like that or maybe a good deal on an ATC70 or maybe a 350x but that's it., or maybe a good deal on a parts bike from time to time.

I can paypal, money order or cash face to face if locales allow. a big red is a 250es. Its the same thing

These trikes all bear the Big Red name:

1982 200e Big Red
1983 200e Big Red
1984 200es Big Red
1985 and on 250es Big Red

I understand where you're going with this but it's an old thread and the OP may have meant 250sx instead. Hard to say I guess but I really wish this build had continued on here. Absolutely awesome work.
