i just picked up my first three wheeler yesterday. i found it on a craigslist ad, got talking with the guy, and found out he's looking for a welder. well i just happened to have an arc welder i bought at a yardsale for 15 bucks. to my surprise, he accepted the welder as a straight trade for this trike, so i'm now the new owner of a 1986 Yamaha YTM225DX. it needs a bit of work, but for 15 bucks, i cant complain.

the middle drive gears are broken, and the broken teeth chewed up the bearings inside the middle drive cover. i've found replacements on ebay for 50-70 bucks so its nothing major to fix. bike bandit also shows that the middle drive assembly is compatable with 2wd YFM and YFB quads of many different years so i should have no trouble getting the parts i need.

the plastics are in very good shape for the age, some scratches especially on the headlight shroud, but not alot of fading. the tires are a little low on tread and have a few small age cracks, but a friend is giving me a set of rears from his quad.

the motor has plenty of compression and turns freely

the mikuni carb needed a good cleaning, and needs a new bowl gasket. someone also ripped the choke cable off, so i've got to find a new one of them.

i havent tested the electrical system yet, but it all seems intact and sound, minus the tail light and battery.

the seat has a rip, but is getting a new cover with some leather from an old couch.

rear hand brake is missing, but that doesnt bother me, as i'm used to using a foot brake on my dirt bike anyway.

all in all, once i get all the parts, i should have this thing up and running by the end of the month

thanks for the welcome guys, and thanks for the manual as well, that'll be a big help when working on this thing. the last project i built ('85 KX125), i wasnt able to find a manual for, so i ended up building the whole thing off of microfiches from bike bandit.

old time, where are you at in PA?
