Ok guys, I've recently decided to take on the project of restoring my 1985 honda big red. I'm at the point now where i'm going to remove the exhaust piping, sand it down nicely and paint the exterior of it black to match the chassis. However, From diagrams i've seen you should be able to separate the exhaust into 2 sections, and i've found this section on the pipe itself. Now, i've removed the bracket that is covering the joint between the two pieces of pipe, yet for the life of me i cannot get the pipe sections to separate. Is there a trick to doing this? Are they even supposed to come apart into two pieces? Or will i simply have to drop the engine and transmission to get this pipe off?

They come apart, try a penetrating type of fluid on it, then see if someone's bent them together/out of shape

I have used a rubber mallet before, and gave it a few good wacks, and it came right off. Give it a try.

i recently had to do the same except who ever had it before me put on a crappy loud car muffler on there and it just sucked. so what i had to do was first the screws out of the thing that holds the muffler parts together (there should be 2 screws). after doing that take some wd40 spray it on there and let it sit for awhile, after that take a flat tip screw driver and tap it to get the muffler to seperate, then theres a trick the muffler is bent in a way that goes around the frame of the wheeler so what i had to do was to take it out by pulling it between the fender and tire. i almost broke my plastic but it worked, the only problem is my back right fender is cracked off and bolted on so i could take that off and slip it through no problem, that will be in the way of getting the exhaust out you might actually have to take off the tire. but thats just me, im not that smart when it comes to engines and stuff but i can manage to take stuff apart and put it together again and fix what needs to be. but after everything is of you can take off the header exhaust and sand that down as well. it will look good, i should do that as well.

I did this almost exactly to the letter, with some pounding with a rubber mallet. Boy that was a job, Haha I really had to nail it hard with the mallet for it to budge but it finally gave! I appreciate the help guys, I was honestly beginning to think the muffler wasn't coming off :P

i wldve done the same thing but for something like this i would use a penentrant and lubricant like pb blaster, not just a lubricant, like wd40 that would be good for putting it back on though.
