Well after a whole summer of thinking I have 175 psi of compression and struggling with jetting, reeds, switching pipes and checking over electrical stuff. I never could seem to get the 250r's jetting to feel correct. Now after trying 2 more comp gauges and finding out the Mac tools gauge we have at work is about 35 psi to hi! Heres the thing When I got the 86 250r it had 175psi on the Mac tools gauge and it still does today after prob 1000 miles I was gonna take it riding this weekend. I dont want it to die on me.

You said you thought you have 175psi, Then you said you still have 175psi.- I'm not sure what you mean. The "mac" gauge you said was reading high/inaccurate? What did the other gauges read?-I'm confused. And whats the symptoms its having? Do you have the trx head gasket (3 layer). That will keep the comp. in the low range.

Holy crap, that post I did didnt make sense. I used a mac tools gauge and it reads higher than it really is. It has only 148 psi and that was with checking it with 2 other gauges. I can see the cylinder has a 3 piece gasket in it. I have no idea if any thing has ever been done to the motor. As far as running its like the jetting is always off (too rich) It wont idle very good and between 1/3 and 1/4 throttle it kinda surges and wont stay at a constant rpm, It did this with the stock reeds and the new v force ones I put in it. Its got a fmf system on it too sea level 3rd clip position, 145 main,
1 1/2 - 2 1/2 turn on the fuel screw and a 42 slow jet and its been humid and in the upper 80's to temps. I run 40-1 klots r-50 thanks for the help

o.k.-How many times did you kick it? Did you keep kicking till it stopped rising? Did you hold the throttle wide open. (Turn your switch to off when you do this.) If it is that low-(148psi)-then you need to rebuild your top end. That's very low!... Also, you said you tried jetting but you still have stock jetting in it? Youre gonna have to rejet the carb when youre done with the topend. Hope this helps.-Oh yeah-don't ride it anymore. Rebuild it before it blows.

Kicked it 6 times with throttle open. Its had I check it when I got the machine in april with the inaccurate gauge and it said it had 175 and I've put on a 1000 miles or so and the compression hasn't got any lower it still 175. What could really happen? I dont have time to fix it now.

Really? A 1000 miles? In a couple months. Do you cross state lines alot?-J.K.-Anyway, You've lost me again. Why are you using the inaccurate gauge again? You said the "mac" gauge was reading 175psi and you found out was reading 35psi more than it really was. So that means your lower than what it says. You said the other 2 gauges are reading 148psi. Also, I dont think youre kicking enough. These kickstart gears dont crank the engine over enough in my opinion. If its at 148psi, the top end is gonna let go and your gonna make things more costly and difficult if you wait for it to blow. If its at 175psi your fine-especially with that gasket.-Now put down that beer.

Now put down that beer.

If you have 1000 rounds on it... I would for sure be freshening up that topend! How did you get 1000 miles on it with wrong jetting?

are you using the appropriate spark plug adapters when comparing guages? a short reach adapter will cause low readings... I wouldnt be surprised if the matco read correctly and the other three were wrong.. dont be too concerned with numbers if it still cranks the same psi on the same guage as when you bought it. a fresh top end is always nice, but 250 2 strokes are known to go along time between rebuilds for play use when all things are right

i say ride it till you notice a power loss.get a gauge that works for your machine.

If it blows your thumb off while kicking it over, it has good compression.............

Cave men didn't have gauges :)
