My son and I took the SX on a nice long ride yesterday. I think this is the first time I've ridden 25 miles in one stretch. It performed beautifully as always, but when I went to put it away last night it wouldn't move. Naturally I assumed the rear end had locked up, but I went for the easy thing first and hoped it had thrown a brake shoe. Turns out it had thrown both! Or the pad material. I've heard of this, but never seen both go at once. I had the brakes adjusted pretty tight, could I have overheated them?

I want to buy a quality set. What are the best brake shoes I can buy? I've usually used Vesrah in the past, but not because of any particular love for the brand, but because they were what was available.

Ok, maybe I posed that question badly. I sounded like a newbie..."hey what's the best trike?" Let me rephrase: what do other people like and use for brake shoes?

Oh, and I just got off Service Honda, thinking "Why not just buy OEM?" Sure enough, they still make them, but they list 3 different part numbers and no explanation of what's what.

What exactly does it mean to throw a shoe?

Ive always had luck with oem but ive used tusk pads/shoes before and had good use from them as well. They key to keeping them working good is to keep them clean brake drums fill up with water/mud/sand and that will kill any shoes. if you ride in alot of that id suggest taking you drum off periodically to clean/inspect them.

Well, I was being silly in my thread title, but the brake pad material separated from the metal backing, and then jammed together and stopped the wheel from turning. Swampthang, this drum was apart and thoroughly cleaned about 100 miles ago......wait, maybe you're right. A buddy and I went mudding a couple months ago, and I drove through more water than I ever had. I never really thought about it. The '85 SX is notorious for water getting into everything, and although I've replaced everything that could allow water into the swingarm and/or differential, the brake drum is by no means watertight. I bet the mud and water didn't do these brakes any good....

I would go with OEM if I knew the difference between the 3 different part numbers!

Honestly, I've had it happen to me; Only own the 85 model though, it gets wet in there (hence the drain plug in the back) and for some reason the water attacks the glue.

This is one case were I'd say - Give Vesrah shoes a shot, I've seen too many OEM linings fall off and jam.......

The part numbers from Honda ending in 670 are newer made parts, maybe they improved the glue?..................

Vesrah is great, I had great luck with them. I have sold a butt load too, Never had a complaint.

I have Parts Unlimited in the rear of my ES, and they are the most squeaky brakes I have ever owned...

They are cheaper pads, Mass produced for Tucker Rocky. Like Tusk is to Rocky Mt.

Thanks for explaining what throwing the shoe means, friction material separating from the metal shoe.

Thanks guys, I'll go ahead and buy Vesrah. I'd just had rather poor braking performance with whatever was on there and wanted something better.
