The Older US 90's and first gen atc 70's are rare. Any ATC really from 87 is rare. the 86 200s and 86 125m's are really rare. The early 1980 185's are kinda uncommon. And last but not least are the blue christmas special atc 70's and 110's are what I'd say extreamly rare. But not as rare as some american made trikes are.

wow to see you say that the 86 125m's are really rare makes me happy....my buddy has 2 of them that are in mint condition...except the one needs a new carb...the other runs great...he wanted to sell me them both for 90 bucks. I have to see if he still has them now..thanks!

HARYYREDTRIKE: are there any key differences on the 87 250r besides the white plastic that makes them unique from the 86? just curious.....looks like from the pic description, the keyed ignition is about it. id like to have that so i dont have to make sure and sit by a window when i stop at a restaraunt
as to the question, as far as in my area, i think about any 87 trikes are the rarest, i have never laid eyes on one in my life. but thats just my personal experience

Hands down the best looking 250R, I am suprised no one has built a replica of this model, it could be done using maier plastics and the 1987 200X key switch/pad and Harlan Lysne reproduction decals. This might be a project that I would be interested .

I cant get myself to like the color placement on the 87 250r. I will be starting a 86 250r roller this winter and Want to do it like the 86 200 x. White fenders, white tank, Red scoops and headlight, Blue boots and blue seat. I see 87 200x in WI quite offen forsale but there $$$$ or beat and still $1000

all depends on where you are.......the 88 big red was the rarest atc ever made only 876 made but you guys didn't get them europe,oz and Japan only places to get them.....the 86/87 125m are very common over here, as we got all the states bikes after the ban......as for the 87R who knows, i still think someone out there has one just got to find it......i have parts book manuals for the 87R and the 87 350x so they got that far as making books and fiches????
the rare bikes production wise are the 86 200S the 87 200X and the 88ES......

While we are on the subject does anyone know if the 1987 ATC250R//350X would have had the exact oem dash pad/key switch as the 1987 200X? From the picture they look the same, It would be good to know if I were to do a replica.

If you want a challenge ditch the thought of rebuilding a Honda ATC and find/restore a TIGER.

The restored ROTAX on the page above makes me piss my pants and forget who I am for a half hour.

09-14-2010, 10:37 AM
Bigtyny: You might research with someone like servicehonda.com or the big name restorers on this site to get a feel for what parts are obtainable before choosing your next project.
They go so much smoother when you are not playing the waiting game checking foreign markets online searching for those special NOS parts...
Bigtyny
09-14-2010, 11:13 AM
no but it don't say unavailable on there which means it is there but who is going to pay $1,600.13 for a 87 big red frame or $1,238.24 for a 87 200x I was just saying there more parts for them then older models thats the same list for honda dealer ship thats not foreign that in michigan

I'm going to tell you again, just because the parts are listed on the site it does not mean they are available. Almost all of the parts you are looking at are not available. If you order them, the company will tell you that.

Ok, to clear up all questions on the Frame availability. I called, they said they had none, and are not able to get them.
Bigtyny:
Find a model you like, drop the dough, clean it up, beat it up, or do whatever you want. Not to take a dig at you or your skills, but it does not seem you have the know how to build one from the ground up. You will save tons of money, time, and headaches by buying a "Ready to Run" three wheeler. Then after you learn the ins and outs, start piecing a rarer one together.

Oh boy, not this again
There have always been stories about "My neighbor has an 87 R" and it turns out to not exist or its an 86. We ask for pics and mysteriously they got lost when the poster moved, or the dog ate them. John has the right idea... X owner
This happens about every 6 months. I have my heart set that the only 87 R I will ever see is a picture in a honda brochure

You need to start carrying a camera, because you are the only one of 28,000 registered 3WW members who has ever seen one.

Not exactly accurate. :)
About the '87 ATC250R.... When the bottom fell out of the 3-wheeler market, and Honda had a boatload of them... they were forced to export them to Europe. However, we got our hands on a '87 R up in Canada, which was not part of the CPSC deal. That's how we got a chance to ride one. Photos of prototype ATCs? Sorry no. Part of my deal with many of the test riders was that I was able to look, touch and ride, but no words or photos in the magazine. The ATC450R was a monster, flat scarey to ride. Way too fast for the general public. The ATC200R was really too pipey for me, and a little too small for my 6-1 size.
Here's a little known fact. Pipe builder, Daryl Bassani owns one of the first ATC250Rs ever made. It was used by Team Honda ATC on the original Parker 400 race, and some in Mexicali 250 race, before it broke a rear axle. Daryl got the bike from Wes McCoy in exchange for the favors he did for Team Honda. That ATC has a chassis number like 00007, or lower!
That's all for now. I'll chim in from time to time, with other odds and ends as I recall them. We had a great time doing that magazine, some of the best trips to Mexico you can imagine! Cheers! Dean Kirsten
