so i just picked this basket case 85 tecate of craigslist.the guy wanted 500 but i didnt pay anything near that for it.looks to be all there except carb,rear fenders and probally some nuts and bolts. oh yes and a headlight.plans are to put it back together, maybe ill even try to pick up or trade one of my dirtbikes for a 84/85 kx 250 for parts and the such.right now it is at my stoage unit till i get rid of a dirtbike or two. but the motor has good compression and said when torn down did run so we will see. finally i feel right wearing that tecate buckle i got from dammit awhile ago :lol: ,now all i have to do is trade my cr250 for a 250r and ill be set:)

One thing you are going to have a hard time finding is plastics. maier discontinued them.
But we did a group buy on white a month ago they will still make them but you must order 10 sets .

You can find used plastic on ebay pretty frequently and pretty cheap. The rear shock is junk even if you have it. Throw it away and get a shock from a 300ex quad. You have to step-dril the top mount a size or two to make it fit, but it's well worth it. I got my 300ex shock for a dollar on feeBay and picked it up from the guy local. :-D the radiators can be hard to find so protect yours.

Yes, Banshee petcocks are a direct swap. As are the gas caps. There is a thread around called what parts interchange or something like that. It will answer all of the swap type questions.

Putting together is really easy, I'm an idiot and did it without a manual. I posted on maybe another fender order for green or black, so far 6 people want fenders. Talked to Mrs. Mosh and will wait till' the 250r plastics are all taken care of, before another order. But it's do-able and I just poked around. Maybe by next spring. Just inquired about fuel petcocks and the Yamaha vmf 400 big bear petcock 2HR-24500-02-00, is what the experienced guys are using. I just do what they tell me and it's always right.

well it is together..need some bolts for the shock mounts,along with fenders and the wire harness to be set up right,along with alot of small stuff.Will need a top end soon as i am only pushing 95lbs:mad:..but it is together and a roller now.Does feel weird and alot smaller then my Z

well I tore the top end off the other night,Order up a fresh one.Just gotta get oem gaskets and then i can run it.Fenders are on their way from a member here,Gunna have yellow accents on this:naughty:.So far It has new moose air filter,Front sprocket,top end,fmf silencer,V force 3 reeds and a nos carb

well Last night i threw the fresh top end on,along with tthe v vorce 3 reeds..no fire at all.I have spark But all i get is a backfire.Since this is a tecate im thinking something with the stator or timing being off?

Sounds like the timing is off. Are you getting fuel to the plug? Was the woodruff key for the flywheel ok?

It's a good thing ya caught it like that. I was out in the middle of nowhere, by myself, when my new stator had a wire fall off the coil, bad glue job from factory (I'll post a video but not much time to load to you-tube right now). I think the stators on Tecate's fail more because of bad seals and less because of a bad rap. I've ruined one from not catching a torn gasket and riding in wet grass, and condensation building all winter long and moisture in the stator cover. It really is a maintenance thing with the Tecate to pull the stator cover and keep it dry and clean I think. And seal it up really well. I didn't have a gasket this last time and the rtv was awesome, had a hard time gettin off the cover. It's not to bad of a clean up and fix code200k, you'll get er' dialed.

Just be happy you have other rides while you work. Mine has been a real hart breaker to but I had my Honda 84 250 r to keep me going. I just got mine running but don't say it to loud it might hear you and break something else. Now I just need plastics and I should be set. Good luck and ride the others if it gets to be to much. Dam team green. Justin

well i cleaned everything up the best i could,timing is spot on,new key and still nothing..Maybe its not getting enough spark?

Question for you guys.The seal behind the stator plate do I need to split the cases to replace that?this one is shot and would like to replace before I get this thing running( if ever)

You can replace it wout splitting. Honestly don't know if it's a lipped seal or not. But either way it can be done. Gotta take your time tho!

Well im stoked.She runs and sounds mean..Cant wait till i get everything all finish and tighten up on it.Gotta an other set of fenders im getting soon.All thats left is the brakes and to swap the rad,hang the wires,tighten the crap out of everything lol

Well here is an update on this beast.she runs and I did a quick lap around the yard and was amazed.Have a good clutch cover coming along with new gaskets and the water pump seal.Which im hoping is the cause of the intermix.Have brakes comming this week from a member here along with Swinehart flywheel:w00t: only thing I keep forgetting to order is a new petcock.
