200X tires, to tube or not.

My '84 200X has the right rear tire leaking like a sieve and i am torn on what to do. The tire might accept a tube but it may not. Could i slime the tire or shouldn't I? I don't want to replace the tire but if i do it will be a duro HF 240. If i do replace the one tire will it affect handling?. Any information is appreciated.

you can feel free to slime a tube and it won't ruin the tire for a real fix later on , unless its not salvagable.

I pulled a full sized car tube out of a tire one time.

Sheer genius.

it was all folded up and tied with string but it worked for a few years for me, I didnt even know it was in there until I changed the tire for some reason.

ok, now i saw slime in the bike section, little bottle for 7 bucks....ok?

went over to farm and garden and a bottle twice the size was 1/2 that price.

thanks, It's possible the tire might be so ripped the tube will shred after a little while though.

thanks, i've tried to tube a tire before but it was so ripped the tube shredded before i got 20 miles. I might try the slime.



why dont you just fix the tire....

Or get a new set. You don't want that thing tearing on you right in the middle of a ride.

id get a new set of tires for my ride.your tires sound shot and they will leave you in a mess down the road.

I too like new 300$ sets and feeling DONE with it!

I'll Slime a tire but I despise tubes. If the tire spins the tube tears at the base of the air valve. Hence the reason I always ran about 8PSI when I had ton use a tube.

There areb some great package deals or take off wheels out there for under 200$.

Tube costs 20$ and 15$ to unmount one side, if it fails and you already 75$ in time, materials and labor into it........ Gotta find what popped it too or bye bye tube.

They also feel very different IMHO............

I'll slime a tire if it's a slow leak (1 PSI / day type thing) including rim leaks.

Otherwise, it's time for new rubber!

Where is it leaking from? Most problems can be fixed, Im not a fan of tubes, but if Done right..will work in most case's if your tire spins on the rim it ill rip a stem,,,But your tires should not spin on the rim....Slime is ok, but i use some better stuff...For industrial grade tires (tractors, graders, loaders ect) That Works WAYY better. Slime is for Tires with Liner cracks and Seepage issues..most of the time on older ones, but some newer stuff has problems too...

I spent $180 on a set of knobbys as well as having them mounted onto the rims (after they removed the old balloons). Those are on my 200x in my sig/avatar.

thanks for all the advice. it's a slow leak from all around. the sidewalls are cracked, mainly from sitting with a flat tire for about 15 years. i can get the HF 240s for $53 each so i might try those, do i need to replace both rears or just the one that leaks?

Just replace both of the rears and be done with it.

I should have replaced my front 200x tire as well, but noo :(

thanks for the offer bigworm but i'll have to decline. my tires are 22X11-8. I'll probably tube the tire(i just use the trike for bushwhacking anyway) but i may still replace both rears.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice. i took off the tire and the inside looks in good shape. the rims are aluminium and in nice shape so i'll put a tube in.
