Just lapped the valves, put a new piston/rings and honed the cylinder on the boys quad. The old motor sat for ten years and ended up smoking like a demon. The thing started right up after the second kick. This is my first attempt at a rebuild. I checked the valves before I started it but do I have to break it in and check them again?

If the cylinder bore was out of spec and in need of an overbore it would smoke even with the new piston and rings. Go through the break-in process and see if the smoking subsides, it just may. If it doesnt, i would bet the cylinder is out of spec....

By checking the valves, do you mean checking valve lash? If so, it probably wont be necessary since the valve components arent brand new and are technically already broken in. But if you have excessive valvetrain noise, it wouldnt hurt to check and re-adjust as necessary. Or if you want to do it for the heck of it, go right ahead. Nothing wrong with double checking things like that after putting a few hours runtime on a rebuild....

Run it for 3-4 hours, Change the oil , Check the Valve/rocker specs cold, might be a bit tighter.
