I'm searching for info on common cracking spots on the 81/82 250R frames.
I would like to have it strengthened before powder coat, as I'm hoping for a CR480 engine swap, 350x front end, 450r rear end, some sort of better rear suspension.
ONLY info I found was this:
"[Airfoolers.com] - What were the most common shortcomings of the aircooled R's? How did you guys overcome these shortcomings?
[Corda] - Different parts of the frame would crack easy so we would gusset the steering head, the foot peg mounts and swing arms. After every race we would inspect the trikes and had to weld the cracks. "
Not too much info or pictures, but I guess it's something. Just hoping someone here remembers from back then or has a frame that's been gusseted.
Thanks

Not sure if you have something we can put on for weight, or just guess work?
Basically, the guy who bought my utility quad wants to do all the work he offered really soon, so I was going to strip it down to a bare frame and probably sandblast it in the next two days. Need an axle, carrier, maybe caliper for the 450r set up. And I wish I had spare shocks to test them out...
(He gave me $200 + swinger mods for 250r, 2 frames powdercoated, 480 250R engine mounts + some other work for the quad.)
This will be something to mess around on while the Big Red and 350x get perfected.

I have 80lb dumbbells that will do the trick. I use to be able to bench press them, working my way up again :beer
Aside from the flat tire, thats the best trike you've shown me so far!!
That 350X frame you had with the wrap has the brake pedal and linkage/triangle I need :D I should have kept it here

The junk frame? I sold the other good 86 one, but kept EVERYTHING off of it. And I still have the junker with those parts.
I'll swing by maybe later this week if that's fine. Will take off most things, but should be able to reattach swinger and shock within minutes if needed.
This 250r had cracked OEM fenders, seat pan rusted out about 85% of surface area, front fender hole and cut hole for 'air flow'. Chopped air box. Front tire bad, but got a brand new one I never put on. But aside from that, wasn't terrible. Some dirt from sitting, and white stuff was oven cleaner.
Figured 350X front end as I have an extra complete one. Have newer good Maier fenders and a decent seat. And a 450r swinger....maybe it will actually come out decent for once.

That completed on isn't mine. It's 'Enginerd' from Airfoolers.com
He used the 450r rear end, stock 250r shock. 85/86 250r front end. I can't find a good R front end, and if I did, it may go to my 350x. I will use a 350x front instead, if it works.
Next issue is pipe needs to be made to fit. And it kick backwards.

Update from Airfoolers in case anyone else cares:

Here's where mine broke. Right side front motor mount. You can't tell it has been repaired after powder coating the frame. I welded the crack up several times and the crack would form right next to the spot I just welded so I replaced the tube. If you do this make sure you put smaller pieces of tubing inside the tube at the joints to give it strenght and give you something to weld to. I used dom tubing for strength.
