I just picked up a KLT 160 a few weeks ago. Did some carb work, gas tank work, intake work, electrical work and got it running..

Now I am running into transmission problems. I get some weird clunking in the gear box I believe. (sounds like someone dropped a walnut in a blender for a second) I can get it to do it more often by running at a higher rpm and letting of the gas to coast. :wondering

From the looks of the parts drawings on bike bandit these transmissions are built tough.

Now I am wondering where to start with this transmission problem? Anyone have any experience with these gearboxes?

Any help is appreciated! :)

Should I post this elsewhere?
Has anyone had the side cases off on this type of Kaw engine. Could a person see anything without splitting all the way down?

Was hoping someone might have knowledge of a common weak spot in these transmissions. With the problem being intermittent i dont know what to think. no certain gear, or certain situations that bring on the ailment.

Split the case = :(

No manual and no shop. it would be a PITA.

I would eliminate any doubt of the differential/driveline problem first. The next step would be to drop clutch cover and hope you see something you can fix externally without splitting the cases. My klt160 has never given me an issue in that area.....wish you the best.
