View Full Version : Does the 250SX hold its own against the Big Red 250ES in towing?

Looking to get a utility trike that can tow a lot and has reverse. I really like the 250SX since it would pretty nimble on the trails, but I don't want to sacrifice any towing capacity. I know it has a granny first but can it tow as much as a Big Red, without straining the machine? Also how does a 225DR compare?

No,the 250es is better for towing, but for trail riding, the sx is better. The best for you would be a 250sx with the 250es motor and gearbox, good suspension, smaller, and powerfull!

i think that the SX can tow just fine, i have both an sx and big red. the power is there unless you are towing way too much and thats not a great idea with a 25 year old machine. the biggest difference i see is the front end. the big red front tire stays down better that the sx. making it easier to steer.
if you plan to do more work that play on your trike then get a big red, if you want something for the trails but also for chores around the house, get a SX

So you can add the HI/LO gear box of a 250ES to the 250SX? Or is the whole 250ES motor different? That would be the ultimate all purpose trike, add up graded suspension it could do anything.

I find the 250SX I got for my father works really well for towing - we spent some time clearing trails in our bush over a long weekend and he towed back 1200 lbs with it! I was surprised by the fact he was able to tow that much weight up a slight hill in 2nd gear... I heard the engine working, but it did it!

There's no hi/lo range selector on either the SX and ES. They have the same engine, just the gearing changes but IMO it's about the same if both have stock tire. 22'' tires on the SX brings the gearing down.

right. the big red 200's built prior to 1985 had the high low, when they went to 250 they dropped the high/low selector, it was a PITA anyway
the SX has 22" stock and the Big Red 25". i have a big red with 22" mostly for stability and its ok, but still much different than the SX, probably due to all the xtra weight.
I have never ridden an SX with 25" tires, i have an SX and 25's so maybe i will have to try it out. adding those tires may make it a towing machine and slap the 22's back on for the trails.

SX?, What about the 225DX? I've asked for a comparison before, but no one has ran the two side by side maybe. I would think the Honda would slightly dominate here, but I like the 225, lots of very nice ones I've seen last couple of years in Montana, I mean really good shape for $400-$650, well worth it, SX's are a little more rare and expensive.

I would think that putting taller tires on an SX would be a DISADVANTAGE for towing...certainly harder on the engine, tranny, and clutch.

That's what I would think, without changing the gearing any.
I have 25" tires on my SX.
