I recently picked up an 84 KLT 200, the guy I got it from hasn't used it in a long time, like a few years. He did start it up from time to time and it ran 2 months before I bought it. I get it home and NO spark, so I started taking it apart to get to the coil and cdi box, I had power to both wires going to the coil but no spark. My brother checked the plug cap and put it back on and I got spark, put the plug in and vroom, SHE RUNS. Played with it for a few days after work and it started right away, let it sit for three days and NO spark. I checked the plug cap and wire again and it seems fine, I cranked the engine over for a while and it started to get spark. It would fire up everyday again and run fine, I let it sit for three days again and NO spark again. Anybody ever have this problem, I am pretty mechanically inclined so I don't want a link to threads about newby's and their problems as I have built and rebuilt a lot of bikes, trikes and quads. I have done some research on this trike and learned that I got an electrical nightmare and I really don't like electrical troubles, so if you have a quick fix I would appreciate the help.

First thing to trouble shoot is to know what you are trouble shooting on. By this i mean to find a complete wiring diagram for references. Start from the magneto and physically check each connection and bends in the wiring. Bypass your kill switch to ensure it isn't the malfunction. Pull the coil back off and check the resistance with an ohm meter, bend the coil and move it around in all positions to ensure there isn't an open circuit (wiggle test). You know. I owned a honda trike that didn't have any power, tried everything to find a solution. The problem was in the coil. I changed coils and it wouldn't keep the front tire on the ground. When you said it wasn't getting any fire sometimes did you mean the plug or at the end of the coil? My educated guess. Coil. Hope this helps

Hey Big Red 250, I'm not looking for a coil like you replaced, just a stock one would be fine. You must have a turbo or supercharged coil if you can't keep the front end down. This is exactly the type of reply i am not looking for. Thank You. It is just strange that there would be great spark and pur like a kitten for hours, then leave it sit for a few days and there is nothing, then crank it over long enough and there is spark again and it will pur for hours. I don't get it. I have had coil problems and electrical problems before and they are usually worse when the machine is hot. I might light this thing on fire pretty soon.
