This thing was hard starting so I took advice from Monroe Mike (thanks Mike) and adjusted the valves. It starts on the frist or second pull now but the motor runs away as soon as it starts. It seems to run fine with the choke full on for a while then it will run away again. The O ring on the idle speed screw was torn so I replaced it with one that is, I think too small. I also put the jet needle clip in the center groove. I have read that an air leak could cause this but I don't see where that could be happening. Can I buy a rebuild kit for this carb or another carb. I understand they are pretty rare. Any ideas?--Grandpa

definitely sound like a air leak. Inspect your carb boot for any leaks then start tweaking the carb.

in another note, I find it interesting that you have a vm22ss mikuni while I have vm19....I wonder which one is the stock??

You want to try to get the right size o ring for the idle screw, I think it would make some difference, but I dont think it would make that big of one on that machine. Check to be sure the throttle cable isnt binding somewhere, gently grab the cable from above the carb cap, and move it in different places of the cable to ensure it isnt binding or routed incorrectly somewhere. Also turn the bars from side to side, and see if that makes a difference. Also, make sure the slide closes all the way in the carb. There should be an adjustment on the carb cap, you loosen a small nut, and turn the cable in to lower the slide. Check the idle adjustment, and check for air leaks using a can of starting fluid. Spray it around the intake boot, or other places you think it may be leaking while the engine is running, and if there is a leak there will be a hesitation or rev when the starting fluid hits the leakt spot. Good luck!

Slide in the carb in the right way??? some will slide in and you can screw the cap down, but the slide is 180, and hanging almost Wide open sitting on the alignment pin not the idle screw.

I cleaned the carb (dirty) and put a new clamp on the boot. It seems to run fine now but when I took the needle jet asembly apart, something didn't seem right. The only thing that drops the needle when I release the throttle is "gravity". Is this right? I looked at a parts breakdown of the carb and part #92022 (washer throttle valve) is missing. I put it together as follows. The"W" shaped spring clip went in the tube first, then the needle with circlip, then the long spring. Is something not right here???

Good luck, my vm22 on my klt 160 has been a pain since I have had it, hard to find parts for and hard to tune in my opinion?? Your spring pushes the needle back down after your throttle lever moves it up when you accelerate, not gravity by the way

Well that pretty much explains my problem. The previous owner had the needle jet assembled wrong. The runaway condition was caused by dirt in the tube not letting the needle fall to the closed position. I ordered the missing washer from Bike Bandit and I'm pretty sure that adding the washer and assembling it the proper way will solve my problem. Thanks Craz. Stay tuned.
