hey guys, well once i figured out the problem with my lights and start button i thought everything was all good. now ive got another problem. took it for a ride up the street and when it got hot it started spitting and sputtering then stalled. the headlights were real dim and almost not working. after letting it sit for about 5 minutes, it would refire with the kickstarter and run for another ten minutes or until it got hot. im thinking maybe voltage regulator or something electronic. any ideas? thanks again

Sounds like fuel starvation... Check if the gas flow freely throught the petcock. You could also try to run it without the gas cap (not full tank of course) and see if it runs any longer. I dont think it has anything to do with electronics.

Check for spark, check for fuel - RIGHT when that happens!
The voltage regulator only limits the voltage to the head and tail light, nothing more.......
I've seen numerous 85-87 SX's break CDI wires right at the battery box, under the elec. tape.....

i know this is a dumb question, but it has happened to me before on my big red.... is the gas cap in the "on" position???

Right when it quits pull the plug to see if its wet or dry and check for spark aswell.
I've heard of coils that don't work when they get hot cause there is a crack in them and when it heats up the crack seperates and it will not work.

well turns out when it stalls the petcock is clogged and it gets no fuel. it is strange though because i dont think its charging. i put a brand new battery in a couple days ago and now it is stone dead. thanks for the great info guys.
