im new to this site and new to 3 wheelers, my neighbor just gave me his 1977 atc90 it sat for at least 15years. i took the carb off and it was gunked up really bad and couldn't be cleaned, so i bought a new 1 on eBay but its not the same it fits good but the chokes on the wrong side. I cleaned the top-end sandblasting and honing and new gaskets. i think the timings right but kinda a lil confused on the subject. so here's the problem i got it to start easy and idles good, but when i give it gas it kinda like boggs and goes good boggs and goes good. is this carb problems or my timing? do i need smaller jets or adjust the needle?

You didn't mention it, but I would make sure I have a honda shop manual for the 90 first. You should be able to download one for free off the internet. It will explain how to time the engine and set your valve clearances and important things like that. I would start at that point first, set your timing and valve clearances and to check your points and make sure the faces of the points are nice and flat, filed flat and to make sure your points gap is set correctly. Start there and make sure all the basics are right before you go and try to trouble shoot other things that may not be the problem. Welcome to the site, by the way.

i already have the manual, the only couple things i don't really now for timing are, is the t suppose to be aligned with the index mark, the way it looks in the manual its not suppose to be. but if i understand right the f should be aligned with the index mark and it will be t.d.c. then aline the cam bolts with the notch in the head. i have good spark and it starts first pull cold. it seems as if some gas is coming out the intake of the carb, so i think i have to check the jet size. and ill take pics tomorrow its to dark now.

if your timing was off it would not idle. It sounds more like a carb problem, can you confirm the jetting is the same on the new carb as it is on a old carb? also, if it's bogging right off of idle I would guess a idle mix problem.

the carb i got off ebay, i took it off and none of the jets are labeled(fml) and i went to 4 local shops and no one carries the jets for it. so i decided to go back to the original carb but i need to use an easy out to get the idle jet out and new floats. so im going to buy a carb rebuild kit, but im broke till thursday so its gunna take a while for i get another stab at it. and i need new rear rim o rings and new tires i found maxxis razor hole shots on sale for 50 so i think im gunna buy them.

I think you better worry about the front forks before you worry about the rims. Also with those ebay carbs, you can sort of judge your jetting by measuring with some drill bits. I know, but at least it gives you an idea if your jetting is larger or smaller than what you started with. An if you have to go larger, you just go to the next larger drill bit size and drill out by hand. It's handy to have one of those large, smaller drill bit sets though. And you realize unless you do some soldering or brazing that you can't really go back in jet sizes, so you have to make sure all your tune up stuff is properly working and spot on first and you have to progress super slowly. Make sure all your gaskets on your intake and carb are present and in decent shape. Sucking air in your intake will really screw up your carb tuning and performance. Also, even though it's not near as critical on a 4 stroke as it is on a 2 stroke, make sure you have a decent and clean air filter.

the tire dosent touch the motor so the forks are fine for now, i just wanna get it going first, and u can buy smaller jets i just cant find them for that carb u dont have to add then drill. if i get a aftermarket filter do i have to use the connecting tube.

buy a new set of points and gap them correctly ive had so many atc 90's act stupid and bog like that and i rebuilt carbs switched carbs so many times to get no where come to find out it was the points ive had little luck with just cleaning them just buy a new set for $9 bucks, i think the spark just craps out or is weak and dosent burn the fuel and gives the you the bog, acts just like a carb problem ive even had it get better or worse with using the choke to trick me even more into thinking it was the carb,,,,,,, thats been my expericence hope it helps

I had bent forks too....Not that bad but still to the point where the fender rubbed the head. I chained the back to my truck (as close to the inside of the axle as I could get on both sides) and then used two come-alongs(one to each side of the front axle) to the back of my sisters car and started cranking each one evenly till the forks were straight. All you need is two stationary objects and something to pull the forks evenly. Make sure all your hook points and equipment are in good shape.

If it doesn't work you aren't out anything and still have to pick up some new ones.
