i have a big red 250 that was just fine. i had the carb off to clean it and since them something is F'd up.

the neutral light would not come on, it would not recognize that it was in neutral, wouldnt start. i checked wires, fuses, then swapped the CDi with my 86 SX, that wasnt it either. finally i disconnected the battery and reconnected and it was fine, i went out today, neutral light came on, i tried to start with the electric start, it clicked, the neutral light went out and it wont come on / start. i will try the battery disconnect thing again and i am sure it will be fine. im thinking there is some kind of neutral switch or soemthng but its pissing me off, the headlights r working, battery is charged.

any ideas

Hmm. have you checked to see if your positive and negative ends that connect to the battery are not shorted out? I hard to replace the ends on my 250sx because they were basically shredded.

Another thing, even though the battery may be charged, it still may be dead. I had a similar problem with my 250sx. I had a battery that i bought a few months ago, didn't use, and let it sit for about 3 months. When i tried to turn over, all it did was click. I bought a new battery and it fixed the problem.

Maybe the starter died?

Sounds like bad connections on the battery terminals. Give the terminals a wiggle while you watch the light and see if it comes on.

well i tried that and everything was good and tight, i disconnected and reconnested and it didnt do anything, neural light still off but headlights would work fine. so i trued again and just unplugged and plugged a few things, jiggled some wires, reconnected. and boom there it is, i think i have a loose wire somehwere but its fine now, i just hate to get stranded in the woods this winter. anyone know what wires are for the neutral switch? i downloaded a manual and will start searching for something

I think the neutral wire goes on the right side of the engine somwhere close to the footpeg. Theres also the reverse switch at the same spot. I dont know how they work but I'm sure you can figure it out.

the neutral switch is on the right side of the motor, bottom back corner and is a two prong plug. had the same problem with mine while back, cleaned prongs and plug, been fine ever since. Make sure the plug goes back on tight or you will have same issue again.

The plugs for your brake and "N" light are under a cover below your foot brake. Plug them in and you will be fine.
My battery terminals come loose all the time too. Use dialectric grease and screw them down tight. Good luck!

I agree with jrwebb8324. My 85 Big Red done the same thing, plug that he's talkin about was undone, connection was bad! Fabbed up a new one, presto, ridin again!
