Went up to jims to play with the $155 Tecate today... cleaned out the carb on the quick put a new plug and a plug cap on ... Kicked twice and on the second kick she fired right up.... runs good considering it sat for almost 3 years... now on to the questions...

1. It appeared to leak some coolant just above the coolant inlet on the reed side of cylinder... ill have to look at it more once i get it all cleaned up.. it appeared to be coming out from the head at the gasket is it possible its a bad gasket.. is that common ????

2 the kicker does not slip but it will not return on its own (im guessing return spring) what do you all think ??? also how hard is it to change out and does anybody have one they would be willing to part with

3. it has a good seat pan and some foam but.... do any or you guys have some pics or something that could help me out with the way the fenders and or seat attach in the rear as well as or in conjunction with a grab bar and silencer pic im trying to determine how it all goes together

4. i plan on running a 34mm carb on it for a while but.. my question is what carb would be better the stock mikuni (looks like it has a slight issue with floats and needle seat leaks a little out the bottom vent when agitated) or i have several pj34 oval slide carbs off my hondas im thinking about running the pj just because i have all kinds of spare parts and anything you could need to jet it right... which would you guys use

heres a link to a extremely crappy cell phone vid of it running

yes it can leak there and its a common place for a coolant leak on any machine.

you would have to drain the coolant and remove the clutch cover.. its an easy task and its possible that a previous mechanic simply put it together wrong..

i switch all of my bikes to Keihins for interchangability reasons.. its a very good idea IMO especially if you have the stuff already

^ Agree. You can try loosening your top motor mount and torque your headbolts, The kicker spring is a little tricky to install, so Like cr480r said it could be possible someone put it in wrong, open her up and take a look. I run a 38mm pj on my Tecate, it's not perfect but WAY better than the Mik.

well i dont have any pics of the bottom of the seat, but there are 4 threaded bolts in the front of the seat pan that go thru the plastic amd where 2 hooks are held on by 10mm nuts, that slide and hook into the frame near the top tube of the frame. then there are four bolts on the back part of the seat that go thru the fender plastic and the rear fender brace that are all held together by another 4 10mm nuts and that brace bolts up to the first hole where the grab bar bolts go thru threw the grab bar, fender brace and into the fame to secure. i will try and get pics tomorrow for you.

My 85 leaked at the headgasket when I got it.... I don't think it ever got re-torqued. I retorqued it and it hasn't leaked in over a year.

I run a 39mm (IIRC) PWK on mine.

Thanks for the info and pics guys luckily i have a nice pan with the hooksfor the front still on and a homemade bracket on the rear .. just could use foam and cover....

Does anybody make or reproduce the rear fender and seat bracket???

Also does anyone have a stock carb they could measure the outer diameter of the end that slides into intake boot (motor side) i was planning on switching to a keihin 34mm pj but was told that the pj O.D. is smaller than the mikuni and would not fit in boot tight enough
