How crucial is the tire width to the rim width??

Seems like the most common is 2 inch wider tires then the rim it's mounted on. But is it still ok to be only 1 inch wider tires then the rim??

I have a set of 20x11x10 tires that I want to mount on a set of 10x10 inch rims. This should be fine right?? And on the other end of that would it be ok or better to run the 20x11x10's on 10x8 rims?? I just thought that a 3 inch wider tire then the rim was too much. But a lot of tires that r for 10 inch rims are 11 inches wide and then most of the 10 inch diameter rims r 8 inches wide.

IMO you can play with these things. I doesnt matter much, all it would do is change the overall shape of the tire.
For your question if 1 inch wider tire is ok, it would be just fine, only thing is getting it on the rim but it should be easy. Keep in mind: thats just 1/2 inch on each side.
I got 10'' wide 4snows on 10'' wide rims, and it fit just fine. Just need to watch for rocks when going sideways because the edge of the rim sticks out.

as long as the tire width is the same or wider thn the rim width youre good to go. i have 12" wide tires on 7" wide rims, 8" wide tires on 6" wide, and 10" wide tires on 7" wide rims. 0 problems. but the only thing you have to remember is that the wider tire on a narrower rim will be taller.

ex. 25x10x12" tire on 12x6" wide rim will be taller than a 25x10x12" tire on a 12x8" wide rim.
