View Full Version : Got broken into last night......

Last night I forgot to lock the doors on the bronco and the taurus, I was tired and spaced it. I always lock the doors. The first time I leave them unlocked and I get nailed!?! WTF!!! This time they are so blatin they left both doors wide open.

I can tell you why, I work on computers for a living and more often then not I have laptops, towers etc in there NOT OVER NIGHT. This same trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro has been happening since I moved from my last place. Who ever is doing this is watching or checking pretty often to catch them both unlocked.

Now the question. How do I go about catching this asshat. Let me get this out of the way right now. I cannot sit in the turck all night with a shotgun. I cannot do anything that requires me to sit in the truck all night every night waiting for him.

I was thinking about mounting a laptop under the dash with a webcam pointed direct at the window looking out. Leave some bait or something. Then I risk a busted window. So I need the best ways to catch him traps, electric shock something. I have reported this to the police a dozen times and nothing ever comes of it. Hell one time I even had finger prints on the door handle plain as day and the police did not even want to take them, I had to tell them to take them. This time just like every other time they took nothing. They tear apart the glove box and string trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro everywhere. All my CD's, Code readers, radios, fishing gear and an ash tray full of change (at least $5 worth). I believe they are looking for computers or nice electronics or worst personal data which we never leave in the vehicles.

So I am asking for ingenious way to catch them, I would perfer if they get stuck somehow till morning so I can call the police while they are stuck there caught in the act. Ideas are very welcome. The back pack is mine I dropped there in the morning it was not there all night. This is how I found the vehicles this morning....

Something funny would be remove interior lights put some rat traps in the glove box and center console. Hidden camera would be cool to see the look on their face when they get snapped.

Do you have a motion detected security light in the area? Just a thought..

That really sucks. Whatever you end up doing, dont set anything up to trap them. It will put you in a world of legal trouble for imprisonment.

night vision wild game camera... there silent and take pic's when something moves by it...

screw it to your garage or tree and cover all but the lense

ive used a motion detector hooked to a circular saw ( no blade ) to scare the neighbors cats out of my flowrer beds....

Pile in some double edged razor blades in the ashtray full of change and glove box. Let them slice their hands all up, and you will have DNA samples too from blood.
But I doubt they will break in again after about 30 stitches.
Just dont forget you have them in the pile of change.

ok go to you local tractor supply store get a solar powered fence charger and hook it up to your car it wont hurt the car as it only shocks what is grounded, let me tell you it will be strong enough to knock them on thier butt`s and then some, you only need to alligator clip the positive side to the car/truck the ground side gos to a ground stake, with the snow/wet ground they will be hurting but it wont kill them i have touched ours on accident several times, cattledog

OK, I have thought about this for a while. Mosh, you have a great idea. However, there is potential for a lawsuit(Attractive Nuisance). If the door is unlocked all the perp has to say is that he was shutting the door(even if it was closed) and slipped slicing his hand on wherever the blades were located. I know it sounds far fetched, but in this brain dead litigious society it is a definite possibility. Remember, hot coffee, between moron's legs, massive burns, millions of dollars.

I like the idea of the hunting camera or buzz saw no blade hookep up to motion light. You could make it really obvious that you have some kick ass stuff in there on say a friday night, then wait for them to strike.

Dammit!

I understand your reasoning, but here is the whole problem with society today. Frivilous litigation.
Now I personally wouldnt give 2 flying craps about being sued for someone braeking into my property.
What you gonna sue me for? My debt? My house payment? Go right ahead.
The minute they came on my property is the minute they lost any rights.
I will take those chances.

many of times I've backed into ours and yeh that sure would sting. At one of my shops it's a real bad neighborhood. My car was what I consider pratice for the thevies as many times it was hit. One night I got pissed and left my Greman Shepard in the car. 20 min later the bro's were running down the street with Sammy in tow. Never hit again. That dog has caught one guy by the arm who was trying to break into my house. Funny thing is thats all he got through the window on the door. He tried to sue me for the damage done to his arm. The judge was so mad his lawyer filed the case he wanted him to pay for the courts time. Crooks and lawsuits don't go to far and will get thrown out.

Google search " mailboxer" ....I bought one, there about $35. It's a small sensor you can put anywhere and if it detects movement or vibration it sets off an alarm in your house. You could be on the phone with the police and the thief would be none the wiser.....or better yet, you could be standing right behind him preparing to deliver an ass kick'n'.

Hi Swigin, nice to see another bronco junkie :)

I am going to buy the hunting camera listed. I am with leviblue on this one. If I catch the son-of-a-b!tch I am going to kick the sh!t out of him. I will take my chances with court. I am putting up no trespassing signs so when he steps on the property it is game on.

What ever you do DO NOT SHOOT THEM IN THE BACK!!! Thats a charge on you as they were trying to flee and would be seen as not a threat. Like I said I like to use a dog but smacking them in the head with a bat is good and legal too. Then you can say he came at you and threatend you. LEGAL. You just can't kill'em and I know that will be hard not to do. The razor blades are a good idea but then in court it could be seen as you knew this would happen and attempted to do harm. It's like wiring a shotgun to your window...not a good idea. Thats premetaded and will cost ya. But a bat or dog and your good. There is only so much you can do.

A motion detecter connected to a bell or buzzer inside your house works great.Only you will hear it go off then you can run out and catch them in the act. Im sure you know what to do with the theif once you get them!

Put up a white picket fence then put these all over:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_W2q9viMY-Mc/TAdH2c3mByI/AAAAAAAAARw/6XRAKkUSvEc/s1600/trespassers+will+be+shot.jpg

So if you shoot them you can say they had plenty of warning.

Also they have keychain video cameras:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Spy-Car-Key-Chain-Camera-DVR-Video-Audio-Recorder-/130408195107?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5cef2423#ht_2748wt_1139

Battery may only last 2 hours, but I know of plenty of ways of boosting that capacity ;)

Yeah, it was the homeless tweaker guy that roams the street (Seen him a few times late at night going through trash cans near the house). Having him put in jail won't do anything. He don't care if he get tossed in the hole yet beating him down gets me in trouble. I just plan on putting up gates soon and signs about no trespassing etc.. If he comes on the property after that then it is his ass.

I love the way you guys can protect your property in the States. It's how it should be everywhere. If I caught someone stealing I'd have to help load my stuff, offer them a meal and drive the to where they need to go. Oh, and I'd probably get charged for not having my guns stored properly. Gotta love Canada!

thats only In Texas (and other states with castle doctrine and stuff) but here In michigan guns are for hunting. using them only when your life is in danger and theres no way out is home defense.
If a guy is stealing stuff then runs off, and you shoot him. your gonna need a damned good lawyer.
But things change and I may be wrong on this. Just my understanding (dad had a friend who did this and got 10 years... didn't help he had dope in the house but...lol)

I buy 50 cent radios from garage sales or goodwill but you need the old school ones with click on switches, not push button.

They are hooked to all my motion sensor lights.
Walk around the place and music comes on every where you go,, or religious stations. REAL loud.

In todays world unfortunately you can't trust anyone, period! I find it hard to believe that people invest in Vehicles, ATV's, Tools, etc etc, and do not invest in a good security system. At Sams Club you can buy a very nice system with high resolution camera's that can record 24/7 for two months or more or set for motion activated recording, send e-mail alerts to who you choose, as well as alerts to your cell phone, police, etc. I can watch my property from anywhere in the world with no monthly fees. I have four camera's that view EVERY angle of my property and one that will turn with security lights in a complete circle, and I can see at night almost as good as day! Also even if one camera is taken out by a perp the alert is sent out to the specified source that you select whenever there is ANY video loss. You can also set-up your system to record at more than one location should the main recorder be found. All for under $1000.00 with a four year warranty. That includes my Sams Club membership. If you don't have a Sam's Club near you buy it on-line. The other issue is we have pets, children that visit, grandchildren, etc. Look how many predators snatch children right out of their yard! In this day and age I seriously recommend having security. It takes out all of the guess work as to who the perp is and gives Law Enforcement the evidence you will need for a conviction. The TV Lines determines the quality. I can tell you now that there are some good wildlife camera systems but the night vision doesn't have the quality in some cases for a positive ID. I have seen TV lines at under 400 while 420 is most common. My camera's are over 600 and very clear night and day. One last note, Just a perp seeing a camera is often enough to deter them from "hitting" your property. General rule of thumb before buying, highest TV Lines Camera you can find and Camera's with the most LED's for the infrared night vision, the more LED's the further the distance you can see in the dark. Hope this helps!!!

The original poster of this thread was asking for a way to catch these perps. It is very alarming at some of the replies, I can't help wonder the age of some of you who replied??? I can't imagine beating with a bat, cutting them with razors, shooting them in the back (let alone anywhere else), etc. over someone stealing 5.00 in change and ruffling up the interior of my vehicle! Can you imagine the perp being rolled over in their bloody hoody and finding that you just shot or beat a kid?, a teenage girl?, or frail homeless senior citizen who is down on their luck and made a stupid choice to try and feed themselves? Cattle-Dog's idea wasn't bad, a good non-life threatening jolt to send them running, but even that would only send them to the next victim. I know everyone cannot afford a security system but maybe could find a good used one on eBay? I have no problem with defending myself, loved ones, and property. Every situation is different. Even a fake camera which I have seen for 10.00 would deter a thief. I seriously doubt that the op here was the only victim and good security not only gives solid evidence but also cause perps to move on to another target. One last note; We use energy efficient flood lights that cost next to nothing to operate and have them on timers. Our place is well lit and perps don't like to be seen!!!

Please, unwad your panties and read ahead some. The OP found out who it was, good suggestions were made, if you can't take a bit of light hearted humor then please don't give the usual "you should be ashamed!" lines, it's ridiculous.

You really think that if someone decides(NOT FORCED!) into doing something like that, that they do not deserve some form of retribution? I'm sorry, but the whole "an eye for an eye makes everyone blind" line is nothing, you do wrong, you face the consequences.

Panties = Unwadded?

I did read the post where a homeless person was responsible, it would seem that you and others did also but still posted after also??? Now its, "...light hearted humor...", that isn't how it came across and I doubt anyone else would agree with you that it was intended to be humorous. Apparently you didn't read both of my replies or all of them? I encouraged the OP in the first post (and others), to get a good security system so that the perp can be caught which in most cases would have held them accountable especially with excellent evidence in hand. Isn't that was this thread was intended for? To capture whoever was responsible? I understand there a probably a lot of young members out here but we all (including myself), need to be very careful about what we post on a public forum. Just the thought of someone considering some of the suggestions in this thread is bad enough, but how would you feel if someone took the advice and landed themselves in jail? I was glad to see others express their concerns about some of the posts also although maybe not as directly as I chose but I really felt my reply before this one was justified for more than one reason. Hopefully so no one follows some of the ill advice above and hopefully we all realize there is a better way to protect ourselves by preventing the crime from happening in the first place with obvious lighting and security and if that fails to be equipped with the evidence for a conviction and to prevent someone else from being victimized. This way we not only protect ourselves but maybe someone else! I offered effective advice for a past situation and present! It wasn't long ago a member here had a nice trike stolen, thankfully they got it back, but thats not always the case. I'm not looking to make any enemies here and truly appreciate the advice shared about three wheelers and enjoy sharing whenever I can but the posts above needed to be addressed, hopefully this clears it up and you understand.

I read your situation and last year had a similar experience . I can say it's getting to the point that honest people have less rights than criminals . The only way my punk thief got any jail time was because he broke his parole . His parole violation was worse than his attempt of stealing from me . Best part was I clocked him but was in fear of a lawsuit from him for assault . How dumb is that ? I had to pay a lawyer to appear with me anytime I was questioned so I didn't say something to incriminate myself to cause him to have a lawsuit against me . Again , it seems like criminals have more rights than honest citizens do . I can say that a loud dog does help .
