Just picked up my first 3 wheeler today. Its not running right but Im hoping to get it running right with the help of the members on here.Im not a gearhead, have no experience with 4 strokes, currently own an ody fl350.
I got it push started but it smoked like a mutha and was missing. The kickstarter seemed pretty easy to push down also. Can you do a compression test on these like you would a 2 stroke? What do you think the first things are i should start with?
thanks

well 200x motors aren't really all that hard to just push the kicker down in the first place. But it does run at least some? I would start with cleaning the carb well.

If the kicker is that easy to push down and it smokes as bad as you say you will probably have to rebuild the top end. You have to remember that this is a 25 year old machine and it's probably due. More than likely you will have to bore it and get a new piston and rings. Sometimes you can get away with a hone and a re-ring, but if yours is smoking as bad as you say I bet you need a bore.

probably a manual.available on this site.looks like a fine start to a great machine.do it right and dont magiver it together

That's a great looking old 200x. Was it cheap?

Get the manual first.

You can do a compression check just like the 2 stroke. Screw the gauge in the plug hole, hold the throttle wide open and kick it over a few times. Specs in the manual.

Clean the air filter and carb, adjust the valves, put in a fresh spark plug and see what happens.

I agree with what everyone else is saying.

1. download the manual
2. read the manual
3. clean the carburetor
4. change the sparkplug
5. change the oil filter
6. adjust the valves
7. compression test if desired

then go from there.

That's a nice looking 200x. Mine smoked like crazy when I got it as well. It had a broken piston but still ran lol. I pretty much count on at least rebuilding the top end of every trike I buy. They just seem to all smoke.

thanks for the replies.Downloaded the manual and been reading through it.Looks like theres a lot more to changing the piston in this thing then my odyssey. With the cam and valves and chains is getting me scared, lol.I'm going to start with the compression test and go from there, probably see if I can figure out how to adjust the valves after that.To answer Jb2 I paid 550 bucks for it

$550 in that condition with engine work needed isn't a bad deal. Firstly you gotta see if it runs, so get a new plug, clean the carb, fresh gas, and see if it will fire up.

If not, then engine work isn't as daunting as you might seem. As long as you put it back together as per the manual, then you will be fine.

if you decide to go into the motor, dont worry.take pics and we'll guide you through it's really not that hard.

That's not a bad deal at all - easy to piss away $500 on seat/fenders/tires/wheels for a $100 beater and yours already has that.

I did my first 4 stroke rebuild last spring - it was an 84 110 engine. I've only gone that far into 2-strokes before that. The the valvetrain is really no big deal. Follow the book. Keep track of where things came from (like o-rings and locating dowels and stuff). You'll be fine. If you've torn down any engine and made it run again, you can cover the important stuff like keeping it clean and following directions.

Looks REALLY good for what you paid.

besides motor issues, how are the rear/front axle bearings and do the brakes work good?

As for that piston pic.......Rob, that thing still ran?....did you find all the broken skirt pcs.??

Very nice pickup for that price Red! Mine was much worse when I got it. Anyway, I would consider rebuilding the top end. When I started taking mine apart, I thought " Oh $hIte! How am I going to get this back together?" But with the manual and the guys on 3WW it has been pretty easy.

I have had it running by push start for a couple minutes, but it smoked and ran like crap. The back brakes do not work. All Ive had time to do is unload it and stick it in garage. Its my busiest time of yr at work and i dont know when im going to start on the teardown.Im off new yrs weekend but if weather co operates im going to take my Odyssey riding somewhere.Just got Works shocks all the way around for Xmas and im anxious to test them out.
Oh,the only engine ive ever torn down is the one on my ody,and i just did the top end.
Thanks for the help

the one im working on right now makes yours look perfect. when i got mine the fenders were shot it had no rear axle the frame was cacked bad and it had a tree grown up thru the swingarm. the only things im using from it are the motor(smokes bad) forks/trips and headlight/guard oh yeah and the wiring harness.

What pistons do you guys recommend? I see sledspartsguy selling WSM,then theres Wiseco,Peakmoto is selling a no name that he states is the OEM supplier to Honda. Then you have pistons that are a different compression ratio, which Im not familiar with.
What is the stock bore on these?
thanks

Well, I say go with Wiesco. I have their 12:1 comp in mine, very nice indeed, but only go to 10.5:1 if you don't want to be mixing race gas. I hear people complaining about kicker gears failing with high comp pistons but mine is no problem, harder and firmer than stock but not too big of a deal. I will also be running a full DG exhaust and a 28mm carb (up from 24mm stock) in a few weeks. I'll let you know what kind of improvement I get. So far the 85 200x is the most fun Trike I have ever had.

Just did a compression test, only got 30 psi, cant believe it actually ran with that low of compression.Which way is the choke on? Is it all the way up or down?
thanks

i got one from the guy on ebay that says its oem. Mine came with a shindy piston

caddymankc

I didnt think it was possible for any motor to run at 30psi, did you have it at full throttle when you kicked it over and did the compression test?It might be higher then you think.

redskinman
12-25-2010, 09:21 PM
Yes I had it at full throttle. If I remember correctly, the manual said nothing about holding the throttle{but I did it anyway}but to make sure the choke was on,thats why I was wondering what position the choke was on or off.

Just reread the manual,it says hold throttle open with choke lever down fully.

Whats the difference in the 83-85 200x's and the 86-88 200x's? Are the engine parts interchangeable?

200XMichigan
12-28-2010, 11:49 AM
Nothing is interchangeable between those engines. However all the hardtail 200s and 185 have interchangeable parts, some more than others. Also the XR200 and another dirtbike have interchangeable parts with the 1st gen 200X engine.

Also I would get a Wiesco.

I put one of the standard compression Wiseco's in my 200x, bored 20 over. No problems to report. I got it from atvunlimited on eBay

If your compression is that low and it smokes like crazy just rebuild your stock carb for now. Usually your float bowl gasket will re-seal just fine. You could buy a new carb but if your compression is that low and it smokes that bad you might as well only replace what you know is broken. Your carb could be perfectly fine other than needing a good cleaning. It sounds like the upper end of the motor however is not. Get some fresh gas, clean out the stock carb, put on a new plug, change the oil, fire it up, maybe it had really old gas and a gummed up carb but from the sounds of it the top end needs to be rebuilt.

redskinman

The gasket won't seal
It's stretched or they put the wrong one in
A new gasket would cost me 20 bucks so I thought why not just buy the whole carb for 20 bucks

FUNFACT: The hubs off of a second gen FL250 Odyssey will fit an 86 200x.

I found this out actualy, the first gen Oddys had three bolt hubs, but the second gen had 4 bolt hubs, and they are a perfect fit onto a second gen(don't know about first) 200x Axle.

well bought a used airbox off ebay, wish i would have asked for advice first.I got it and a unifilter I bought in the mail today, from what I can tell you dont need the inside brackets and cage to run the uni, looks like it just will clamp to the airbox itself without all the other stuff needed,is that correct?
