I was in the same boat. I really wanted a water cooled 250R. I found an 81 for a good deal and could not pass it up. I drive my R almost every day and do not regret buying it all. I say go for it.

I would go for it. Check out airfoilers. I would buy one in a heart beat. May not be as fast but it sure won't be slow, and its the original.

I rode it last year it goes well, the motor is sweet, the only non original part is the seat!!!
he's also fitted the bigger front wheel from an 84' aswell but he has got the original.

It's not really for sale, but i'll give him a ring tomorrow to see if he'll sell it!!!
he's a bit of a collector of odd stuff, he's got a few atc70's some z50's, three tecate4's and another tecate4 in bits...!

Mine has a DG pipe and the only bike anyone i know has that's faster is my brothers built up 1998 KX 125 (it smokes it). They can be a handful on the trails but quick. My bother took my SX and i was the 250R yesterday messing around on trail on trail on my property, when we got home my Brother was like what gear were you in? He started laughing when i told him 1st. He said he was in 3rd and 4th and could not keep up (i have way more experience on trikes though).
