So I'm looking at getting my first two stroke, an 81 250r, but the previous owner had accidentaly ran straight gas through it. I know the topend will need to be rebuilt, but any guessed on how thuroughly rebuilt?
200 for a complete, once running airfooler isn't bad though......

One thing to check is the seat pan. If it's rusted through - which most are - expect to pay $100-$175 for one. That's IF you find one.

If he ran straight gas through it, there is a good chance there will be more wrong with it than just the top end. I wouldnt be suprised if the lower connecting rod bearring got damaged as well. So figure if worse comes to worst, a bore, piston and rings, wrist pin bearring, complete gasket set, connecting rod kit or complete crank, main bearrings and seals. This would run around $375 if you can do all the work yourself. The only way to truely find out what is wrong, however, is to take the top end off for starters, and take some measurements, and do some inspecting. 200 bucks seems like a really good deal, especially if the rest of the bike is in decent shape.

The tank is original metal, and not rusty much at all. original rear plastics in great shape, front fender broke in half though.
BRAND NEW (either 36 or 38mm) KEIHIN CARB!

Deal fell through, it came to visit yesterday.
No brakes, no seat at all, you can see a little bit of rusted metal where the seat would have connected, the bottom end wasnt locked up, the top of the piston was melted, new sleeve, would have needed bored, no front headlight, tailight, or arm for the rear brakes, complete motor and systems for it though.
Odd, he said it was a Keihin Air Stryker carb, but it was a 37mm, but it was a brand new carb. I would have had to find an intake boot for it anyway.
So the guy was SO sure it would be a 5000 plus trike restored, bull, shiyut. He wouldn't take any less than 300 for it, and it would be 400 if the new carb was included. He was keen on trading me my 86 200x for it though, which I said Hell naw to of course. The guy was just a dillweed and thought he'd found gold. I It would have taken alot more than 400 to get it nice.
The tank was original, and was almost completely rust free though, he kept on about how that would be a 200+ tank......
Did i make a good choice, yay or nay?

I
DID NOT
Trade.
His bottom dollar was 400, and that was without the new carb, and he was just acting like a complete dillweed. I have more to work with right now on the 200x, and I can wait and find a nice newer model 250r for under a grand here.

Yeah it is actualy, the faom is off the fenders, though they look good, entire seat will need replacing, it'd be a very costly build.
JUST MAKE *****SURE***** THAT DERREK WELLS IS THE ONLY ONE TO COME!!!!
He has a friend from Cali who is the royal DICKWEED, and he will try to triple the price and act a fool. He rode my 200x up the road and back, without my permission, when they were trying to determine if they wanted to trade, and claimed that the front rear shock is (broken) due to it pulling right. It's pulling due to tire pressure.
It is definantly rough, I just had to turn it down, if the guy comes alone, then you may be able to get a fair deal. Good luck!
