Having major issues that are driving me crazy......quad has erratic idle, runs horrible, backfire, stumbles, wont idle at times and just shuts down like you pushed the run switch over to stop. Runs better with the choke on but no where near close to what it should run like. I have done and checked the following:

Cleaned carb and rebuilt with new kit.........2 times (I have cleaned many carbs in my past and have experience with making sure every passage is clean and clear.

Carb is getting gas and is set back to factory specs

Starts up on 2nd or third kick

New aircleaner

Gas cap vent in working order

Valves are spot on

Timing is spot on

Bi-passed reverse switch just in case

Has spark, tested coil but it would jump around from 0-2 ohms, mostley 0 ohms but I am not an electrician.

Spark seems ok, not bright blue like it would light up the night, but there?

Fresh gas

checked all wires and connectors for issues, found nothing

Headlight nice and bright while running

No air leaks that I can see, cant get it running long enough to spray around the carb and such.

Possible causes I can think of but dont want to spend the money unless I have too:

Bad CDI?
Bad Coil?
Bad Stator? dont know if that effects anything.

When adjusting the valves, I noticed a film of oil, oil residue, where the stator is, I would assume I have a seal that is bad, but its not tons of oil (YET). Could a stator that has some oil residue on it be causing this?

Any help or input would be much appreciated before I push this thing down my driveway and leave it in the middle of the road with a sign that says "you're problem now"

Thanks~

Thats what I have been told. Sucks because I dont want to spend the cash on a new one. Anyone know where I can get one from a trustworthy source?
Thanks for your help.

to me seems like an air leak. most bad CDIs i have seen result in no spark.

still not sure though...

I've seen plenty of bikes with bad CDIs that still have spark. Every once in a while we'll get a bike in the shop that just won't run right and everything is perfect and in spec. Yup, CDI box is malfunctioning.

One little detail i did leave out, it seems to run a "litttle" better with the choke on, would this still be a possible CDI issue

Yes, it could still be a CDI issue as strange as it sounds. Who knows what the conditions are in the combustion chamber with erratic spark, but richening the intake charge via the choke, normalizes things a little.
