Kick start ?

Ok my ? Is when I go 2 kick start my atc 250 sx 1985 it does not turn the engine over but is I move it like a inch or 2 I will get it to chatch and turn the engine but most of the time it will just slip and the kicker will fall 2 the ground and make a loud ratchet nosie but it the kicker will pop back up. Now if I do the same thing, moving a inch or 2 about half way Down I get it to chatch more than at the top. O haven't tookin it apart yet but wondering if anybody has any idea what it would be.

Some told me it was the spring but idk if that is it or not?

I think it is just the spring not fully recoiling. Mine did that before I took it apart because the spring was not installed in the little notch. If yours is catching sometimes i think you just need to let the teeth catch and by gentle and feel that it is locked before you kick. Mine is doing that right now , I know exactly what your talking about .

It's the sprag gear, also called the one-way clutch... very common problem in the 250es/sx.
