Hi guys. I really appreciate all the advice I have been given on this forum. I used to ride a lot as a kid (I hate to admit in the 70's and early 80's). So when I say "back in the day" it really was back in a different day.

As a kid, I rode dirt and in the woods and rarely on the street with an open face helmet. In the winter I had a snap on clear plastic face shield.

So now I have a nice 1985 250es Big Red. I'll be using it around the farm, in the woods, and to ride along and down creeks (gold prospecting hobby hauling in the creeks). I won't be ripping and racing. Oh, and I wear glasses.

I need to get a good basic helmet for those situations. What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance;
Rob

I dont know what would be the best for these situation but I'm using a motocross helmet with goggles all year long. I'm just wearing a thin hood underneath when it get really cold. Still not as hot as a snowmobile helmet but I can wear it all year long.

Try on a few - and when you find one that feels good - get the best one you can afford, best helmet advise I ever got.
A motocross style helmet is great for woods riding. It also gives better protection than the old open face ones from back then.
With a lot of dirt and dust it gets difficult to keep snow mobile or on road style helmets clean at times, most off road styles can be washed with a hose if your not planning to use them until there dry.
As for the glasses (i have them also) most helmets work fine with them, you just may have to take them off while putting the helmet on and off. You will need to get goggles sized for them, most manufactures make a set specifically for this.

try them on!...helmets sizes vary quite a bit! once you find one you like....google search it for sales....you might be surprised at the prices you find

Thanks everyone. Good advice. I think I will opt for a full face style over an open face style.

Next time I hit town I'll go try on some helmets.

if you whant a good deal the cheap motocross helmets that you see at wallmart and auto parts store are just as good as the expensive ones because they have to pass the same safty tests

Garage sales are also good places to find helmets. I got mine for $15, and the PO used it only twice! It's a modern helmet too, checked out the makers website and their prices are a shocker, to say the least

Just a caution, be careful with "garage sale" or " flea market" helmets that are used. Sometimes if they were in a crash, the damage is hidden under the hard shell. Make sure you are confident they are solid - you really don't want to mess around with your head.

My dad had a helmet from the 80s with the snap on face shield and the padding was tearing up on it. He ended up getting one of these and he likes it a lot, its similar to his old one except the face shield lifts instead of snapping on. If you buy it in a few select colors its only 40 something bucks and it also comes with a visor you can use instead of the face shield. He wears glasses a lot of the time and likes that he doesn't have to take them off to put the helmet on.

Yep, went over it really well, it's a solid helmet, and proved itself the first night when I tossed myself off my X :)

Sorry there is some things you don't cheap out on.A HELMET is not one of them! There is alot of affordable really good qualtiy helmets out there. You can purchase a Snell approved helmet for $100 to $150.Another thing a helmet isn't made for a lifetime of use either. They should be replaced every so many years.I am sure you can find a closeout on good one on-line somewhere.

I don't care what anyone says, I got a modern helmet for a steal (this was quite an upgrade from the 80's helmet I was previously using).

Has anyone tried a similar style to one of these full face flip up modular designs?

If a helmet is used alot most generally is replaced every five years.Things start to break down and it won't fit right. They way a helmet fits is also just as important as the quality.A helmet involved in a crash should be replaced. You can't see the damage from the outside.Unless it is split wide open.A good quality one piece full face is the way to go.For the money HJC make really some good ones.
