View Full Version : How to get top speed out of my 200x

I bought an 85 200X a few months ago, I am now in the process of restoring it.
I returned everything to factory settings and I was hitting 52-53 for a top speed.
I was wondering if I changed the front/rear sprocket would it make much of a difference? I have found an 11, 12, and 13 tooth front sprocket for sale and as far as rear sprockets I've found a 38,39, and 40 tooth.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Josh

Larger in the front. Smaller in the back. I have no experience on the 200x but I would imagine it would lose some puddin on the bottom end. Try larger tires on the back too.

No thats exactly what he doesnt want to do if he wants to gain top speed. Bigger up front and smaller at the back sproket.

^Yeah I was about to say. And I wouldn't go over 22" for rear tires on it, since it's more of a sport machine.

2mm bigger carb xr200 head
That is going to do absolutely nothing for his top speed.

bigger carb gices more power. more power means more top end.

2mm is jack....you need to run a 28/29 (can't remember exact size) from a XR200. you also need to use the early 80's XR200 manifold to match the larger carb size with the 200x head intake passage. I don't think running a xr 200 head is going to do anything for you, I'm pretty sure the compression difference came from a different piston design, not the head itself..

yea xr200 head is the same specs as 200x. piston is only .5 more than than 200x. your best bet is a wiseco piston, larger cam and 26mm carb from a xr200. (they were 26mm vs 24mm 200x) this is a cheap way. if you want expensive, i can go there too.

You can change the gearing with the sprockets and fit bigger tyres but if you gear it up too far you'll strugle for power, so you'll have to do some mods to make more hp!!

Top speed Oscar. He hasn't asked a thing about the motor.

If we are counting out motor mods...I guess I would just leave it like it is...whats the difference if it goes 53 or 55. If someone asks you how fast it goes...just say somewhere in the "50's" and your covered.

My bad ,26mm is the XR 200 carb...but there are other mods that go along with this to make it work correctly. I believe the is an dirt wheels article about it over on 3wheeler.com or something like that. It lists everything you need...the early 80's xr200 manifold is one of them. the stock 200x manifold has a smaller ID.

Here, this will help you a bit for just the sprockets. It's not for a 200x, but will give you an idea of where to move up and down and for what tire size.http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/tecate3.htm

if he mods the motor he can get over 60 mph, but in stocker forum I don't think it has enough power to break the 60's at all no mater what gearing he tries. it's kinda a wall. you need more pwoer to get more speed when you have gearing changes.

I guy in the nearby ATV/motorcycle shop had his old 200x rolled in while i was checkin stuff out. He told me about how he had sold it 10years ago and just bought it back from somebody a few months ago. Pretty cool story. He also told me that he use to race it back in the 80's and that he was clocked at 100mph on it. He says he didn't do any major motor mods but just changed the gearing. He also said he was going down hill and it was a long stretch of path. But no matter what the circumstances, I jsut couldn't imagine going 100mph on a 200x.

i don;t think that's very accurate.unless he was in a tornado wind flying, i don't see it runing 100mph. 250Rs have issues getting clsoe to that and they are 3-4Xs the power the 200x is. Never beleive an old story like that. if the bike is stock, he did not race it. he messed around on a track a few times, but real racing would require quite a bit of modification to any bike. ask aony here who has done it. they will tell ya, the guy was blowin smoke.
He's lucky you were there. I'd have called him on it. with a "prove" it. heck mod otu the 200x with a wiseco 12:1 deck the head bump it to 14:1 and run a rad cam and all kinds of mods, still won't hit 100mph. the internal gearbox jsut cannot do it and they do not make the right external gearing as well that fits. not to mention i do not think a 22-24hp motor (how much you can get out of a fully built rsace 200x engine but lasts veery short) would be able to push past the 85mph mark with any gearing. it's just simple math.
