I picked up a 1984 Honda Big Red ATC 200ES back in August of 2010. This was the 3 wheeler I first rode (literally) when I was in junior high back some 15+ years ago. I've been bugging my friend (and his dad) for years, and years, and years, for he and his dad to sell it to me. Finally they did. I've spent time cleaning, grinding, replacing, and repainting it for the last deer season. But now I've got a problem. Hopefully someone can help. When I start moving, in first or second (sometimes third) it starts to slam, or bang feeling from the rear diff. I changed all the fluids, and have them at the proper amount. It has fresh gear oil in it from when I first got it and replaced it. I'm not sure if it's coming from the selector going between high and low (it swaps back and forth between the two pretty easy), or if it's something with the shaft drive. Not sure if maybe it's staying in low, and not going into high, or? Didn't have this problem all through deer season. One thing that did happen over deer season is the left dust seal came off. Possibly some water got in there, but my garage is too cold to start ripping it apart to see. Has never done this before, and hasn't started until fairly recently out ice fishing. Has anyone else had this problem? Or am I looking at pulling the drive line? I've changed the diff oil, but haven't checked it since I did it back in august. Thanks in advance, I've been lurking on here for months, and finally joined.

Here's a full pic and what it looked like before/after I've done to it so far. This was a side project last late last summer and posted up on this on another forum I'm a part of. Instead of taking up room here with pics, here's the link: http://www.yzf600r.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=58151&p=691533&hilit=3+wheeler#p691533

that cover is nothing, it just hides the clutch adjustment screw and nut and protects you from roasting your leg on a hot crank case. It sounds like the gear selector is having issues staying in the selected gear.

The dust seal that came off was on the left hand side of the diff.

Is it slamming an banging as you let off an give it gas?? or just under gas? sounds like a bearing or a tooth on a gear is bad... i dont know... be nice to hear it lol to determine if its popping or banging like there is play in there somewhere...

It does it on the gas, normal get going speed. It's not a constant slam feel, but annoying enough that I'm getting concerned. Last time I was on the ice, it'll get going, and then 20 feet a slam. Keep on going, maybe another 30-50 feet, it'll slam again. Once I'm in 3rd, it's seeme to end, but it has done it in less frequency in 3rd-5th. I'm going to take it out again after work on the ice and see the frequency it is doing it, which gears, etc.

I did some test riding last night. In Low, everything is smooth sailing. Once I go back to high, it starts slamming from the tranny, not the diff.

Sounds like a tooth is broken on the high gear inside the high/low gear box. This happens a lot when people due burnouts by reving the motor in neutral and slamming it in gear. I would check there first.
