I have a Honda Big Red 250ES with front end chopped off and welded a 2001 Polaris 4 Wheeler front end with disc brakes. My question is...My starter went out so I was using the kick start to start it for about last 4 or 5 months, about a month ago, the kick start started acting like it was slipping about every other kick. Then I went out about a week ago to start it and its slipping full time now. If I kick it fast it slips but if I return it to the home position and wiggle it it catches and then turns the engine about 2 revs, then slips again. i pulled the cover and its turning the big gear to the left and also turning the gear to the right (Is the one on the right a clutch?) but only half of the one on right. Its not turning the back part of that gear that engages to turn the engine over. What is causing this problem? Is it going to be a complete engine teardown to fix? Also if I replace my electric starter(I ordered one tonight) will it engage the engine or does it work off this same gear or wheel on the right? Thanks for all the help, this is about to drive me and the kids crazy!

my sx is doing the same thing, not to that extent so ill be curious to see what is the culprit. btw, y would you ruin a BR by putting 2 wheels up front. and polaris to boot?!?!?!

I have the same problem with my 85 Big Red. There Is a one way clutch mounted to the crank on the right side of the engine that allows Honda to use a primary clutch for low engagement. It also has a big clutch / clutch basket like most other manual clutch machine's for heavy pulling that Is needed for a utility machine. The one way clutch part number Is 91101-HAO-004, but you might need the outer race also. That part number Is 22500-HAO-010 for the outer clutch hub. There Is also a one way starter clutch under the left side cover on the flywheel that allows the electric starter gear to free wheel once the starter starts the engine. You need the one under the right side cover, as It's the only one that will cause the kick starter to not engage.
