View Full Version : Knobbies vs Wooley Boogers in the snow

I am both shocked and amazed at what I experienced today. I decided to break a trail around my house so that my nephew and I could play on the trikes. I tried with my SX first and it simply wouldn't go through the snow(with like new Wooley Boogers). Then I tried with my TRX250 Fourtrax and it was only slightly better, but not enough to matter ( with new Mud Lites ). Then I thought, "what the hell", and I tried the 125M with new knobbies on it...and it went right through the snow!! Sure, it was scratching, but it really went pretty good. I would not believe this if I had not seen it with my own eyes. I realize it was 3 different machines and that the 125M weighs about 80lbs less than the SX, but I really think it was the tires that made the difference. I always assumed that knobbies were terrible in the snow...but I guess not.

I guess I be one of those Canadian guys that have yet to try the 4-Snow. We don't usually get so much snow around here any more...this year is special. It's hard for me to justify buying a set of 4-Snows for the maybe one month of use they would get per year. We only just had enough snow to need them in this last storm, and it rained like hell last night, so I can get by without them again.

I have Carlisle Strykers on the back of my 185s and they do great in the snow. They aren't much different than Wooley Boogers.
I would never get a set of Mudlites, my buddys had some they were worthless pretty much in my opinion, didn't take them long to sell and get other tires.

I have Wooley Boogers on my BR 200es, and I havent had one problem getting through the snow. Even through the big drifts I can get right through them.

I personally like stock tires on my trikes. I really haven't experimented with many different tire types, just seems like the stock tires give the best ride and traction for me!

hahaha. I went for 2 runs on sat. The first i blew off one of my studded turf tires. then put my titans on. I was breaking trail in front of 4x4s. But then threw my chain. ;(

Balloon style tires are the best in snow. If you got a flat surface tire, they'll just skid and spin but they will do better on crusty snow if you can stay on top.Balloon tire just dig right through the snow and catch traction on anything hard under the snow. IMO they suck big time once you've went right through the crust and if theres quite a good amount of snow under.
I got a new set of 4snow and they are really impressive but thats nothing like a snowmobile.

Part of it is just the weight. The 125M is really light. My YT175 will go places my 250ES doesn't want to go even though its got great tires. The lighter trikes have an advantage in the snow. Part of it depends on your own weight too. The real test would be trying the tires on the same trike.

thats how it was for me before i bought my new tires for my 250es, my 125 with knobbies on it was going through the snow like nothing, now there is 2 feet roughly, and the 125 doesn't move... The 250es goes right through it, up hill and everything with the new 26" kenda bearclaws

I agree with you for most of them but ski-doo's are really reliable. Probably because they are designed/made in Quebec

It depends on the spacing of the knobs too, the wider spaced knobbies do better. My Moto 4 200 with regular knobbies goes anywhere in snow
