Found this forum and thought I would show you all my "Kits by Heald Super Tryke". My dad got it new back in 1973 and put it together. It has on it the highest output motor of the time. A 20hp 2 cycle Kohler. He installed turn signals, and brake lights on it. I still have the original fenders, and the front ski attachment for it. But pretty much everything else doesn't work or is gone because the motor sure shakes it to bits. Even the dang seat is barely hanging on.

Well, it sat outside just barely under a lean to shed for 20 years because the belt went bad on it and nobody wanted to ride it anymore. So about 5 years ago I drug it up and fixed it up. Put new belt on it and made an air-cleaner and it fired right up. Bad thing is parts are no longer available for the motor. Just the charging diodes. I put different tires on it to. The old ones were 21x12x8 and the new ones are 22x11x8 worked fine for 5 years. The one on the front is still original though.

The driven clutch went bad on it and I recently rebuilt it and been driving it a bunch. Top speed is around 40mph but I don't think the motor is putting out what it used to.

It sure is fun to ride, going down the long dirt road WOT for miles is a good time, but I'm wanting to go faster. Thinking about putting a snowmobile motor on it and gearing it for speed. Because honestly this thing sucks on the trail. It's bouncy, wide, hard to handle, no guts for pulling up hills.

Anyway, enough talk here are some pics and a vid.

Vid Details.Vid is start up and short ride and after I picked up the camera I put my helmet on.

PS. I read the rules and I hope I haven't broken any. This looks like a great community and I'm hoping to maybe pick up maybe another ATC in the future.

find a older sled motor like a 340 399 400 or 440 rotax they all use a flat bracket on the bottom to mount the motor and use the same pully system and would be a easy swap

That is something along the line of what I was thinking.

And about the tires. I just found the "Say something nice about Trail Pros" thread and had a good laugh. But hey, my Grandpa got them for me and they were the only tires at the Rural King in that size so that's what we got. Payed like $40 for them. But till today, I never knew anything about them. So now I will add new tires to the list of things to get.

That thing looks fun. Is that a normal handheld camcorder?

Sounds good! I was expecting it to sound like my Cub Cadet... cool old toy there! You'll definitely be happy with an actual Honda ATC when you get one...

Thestud25 - It is fun on smooth ground, and yes its a normal camera.

86T3 - There are a few of them still around, but I have yet to see one with the same engine as mine.

atc350xer - I get that a lot, people see the motor and don't expect it to sound like it does. And I'm sure I will be happy with an actual trike. Uncle has a Honda 125 and its a blast to ride, and will go anywhere.

I have owned three Carl Heald products, two Super Broncs, one 7hp the other 8hp. I also had the Super Tryke identical to yours except you have the rarest option, the 20hp! Mine was the 10hp. I would have to look back into a brochure but I'm pretty sure the 20hp was rated for over 50mph, my 10 was rated for over 40mph. Well worth doing a complete restore and I found parts for mine before I sold it. I had a better foot rest option but also had the rear suspension like yours which was another option. Foreign trikes are nice and some rare but there are also some rare American trikes and again you have one! I'll add a photo of mine as soon as I find it.

Look in the albums section and check out 2Tim215 album for photos, I believe its called Past and Present. My son is driving it last winter. I can't post the photo here because he isn't wearing a helmet. Mine was in great shape, he was really kicking up the snow! Click on the photos for a larger view. Notice the High Rise bars?

Nice! They went with the chrome package and ski option. Most fenders were painted.

Here's a photo of mine the way I bought it, I cleaned it up some before I sold it last year. Headlight had High/Low beam, seat was not original like yours. The 16hp which was the biggest Briggs & Stratton offered was rated at 50mph, that is the next most desirable one from yours. Some may prefer the Briggs as parts are readily available. If you restore it hope to see some restore photos as you go at it! Another note is that the 20hp was only offered as an option for a short time that is why they are hard to come by and the rarest!

Was wondering what that thing was. I saw one on youtube, this guy was riding across the ice up north pulling all his ice gear. Looked homemade but cruised across the ice nice.

What would those compare to in the honda world ? Power wise ?

As far as comparing these to anything Honda made I can't think of anything. EDIT: Just saw the "Power wise". Probably comparable depending on what Honda as they had up to 20hp motors. These were much more stable than most if not all foreign trikes as they had a stock 48" rear width and were over 6' long. They came with snowmobile style clutch systems and had great low end torque and then as the rpm's increased took off pretty good at high speeds and some had a reverse option. In many states you could actually register them if you ordered the "Street Legal" kit which included signals, brake lights, and horn. They were offered with Sand Dune style tires as well as ATV. You could really load them up with gear and hit the desert etc. Some came with a bench seat and hauled two adults with no problem and some had a "Truck Bed" option that held I believe around 650lbs or more. They were offered with many options and American Made. Parts were much easier to find and a lot less than foreign parts. Quite the trikes! Carl Heald who founded the company named them, "Trykes", not sure why?

It would be a great project to restore. I probably should do that instead of modify it.

Yes they are pretty stable compared to normal 3-wheelers. But I did manage to roll it once, doing donuts on a sandbar the tires caught and pulled it over. The motor kept running and I was able to get it turned back over in time because I don't have a way to start it other than jumper cables.

I wish mine still had the stuff mentioned above in the street legal kit. I still got the horn but the turn signals and brake lights have since rattled off. As has the roll bar. I had it but it fell off while I was riding and I never recovered it.

But when I do get time to restore it, I will try and keep a thread on it.

And I will argree with the loading down with gear. We had an irrigation break down in the field one time and we loaded the torch, hammers, tools, parts, my dad driving and me and my uncle on the baskets and it pulled us through the muddy field no problem.

I believe someone bought the company some years ago now and if I recall were producing more Kits and parts. I remember seeing some over the last few years it seems at around 3000.00 for the Trykes. My brother had the Truck version and it was from the 70's looked good but obviously used and he got around 1000.00 for it. You can find used motorcycle signals, switch, etc. to make it road legal. If I end up buying another one I'll probably restore it and put it on the road! Have fun, be safe!!!
