as far as i know for atv's it is 48, although they may have increased it recently to allow for some of the newer quads that were too wide stock. also, the 50" limit may be for the "pilot program" which alows utv's (kawasaki mules, etc.) on some of the atv trails in certain counties.

Michigan ATV trails have a max. width of 50" In Michigan ORV trails and ATV trails are different. ORV trails allow Jeeps, 4wd trucks etc. They are not allowed on ATV trails

Here is what the DNR had up, thanks for posting the Michigan width I didn't even think about that! Hopefully with our budget changes some of the DNR rules can be revised to cater to people comming to our state and not fearing a ticket for doing somthing they didnt know was wrong and leaving a lasting negitive impression. In WI the warden here close to me said they have a strict you break the law policy you get a ticket no exceptions. Along with the further you live from the court house the bigger the ticket will be.

ATV Tire and width restrictions change

MADISON – A recently enacted state law changes the tire and width restrictions for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) operating in Wisconsin. The new law defines an all-terrain vehicle as an engine-driven device that:

* has a net weight of 900 pounds or less;
* is originally manufactured with a width of 50 inches or less;
* is equipped with a seat designed to be straddled by the operator; and
* is designed by the manufacturer to travel on three or more low-pressure tires.

A low-pressure tire is defined as a tire that has a minimum width of 6 inches and that is designed to be inflated with an operating pressure not to exceed 10 pounds per square inch as recommended by the manufacturer.

“The main changes were expanding the maximum width from 48 inches to 50 inches and the removal of any rim size restrictions,: said Gary Eddy, ATV administrator for the state Department of Natural Resources. “ATVs such as the Polaris Sportsman XP, can now be legally registered.”

Along with changes to the tire and width restrictions, the law changes also includes making it illegal to modify an ATV so that it is wider than 50 inches and to operate an ATV equipped with other than low pressure tires.

“This law change doe not apply to utility-type vehicles or side by sides as these vehicles are not equipped with a seat designed to be straddled by the operator,” Eddy said.

New ATV registration application forms won't be available for a couple months; however, the online application on the DNR Web site has been updated. Customers may begin using the online registration form immediately. More information on ATV operation in Wisconsin is available on the ATV Safety Education pages of the DNR Web site.
