I took my pullstarter apart, the rope broke and i figured this would be a good time to clean/lube everything.
Well I am looking at the clymer manual at how to put it back together and it says to insert spring into slot on center post......there is no slot anywhere, doesnt appear that there ever was. am I missing something? I cant seem to wind that thing up in that area without something to hold the middle.
Any help would be appreciated.

they are a real pain to rewind, the center post is on the plastic drum, not in the housing, but the spring winds into the housing, looking at the housing you should see a metal lip and a bend on the outside of the spring to attach it to the lip on the housing you wind it in from there, the inside that attaches to the drum will be free when all is said and done. depending on how long of a rope you put on it will mean how many times you wind it out before running the rope. If you want pay shipping both ways and send it to me and I'll redo it for you and make sure it is fully assembled with the rope greased

something else check page 116 in the clymer book or 126 as adobe reader has it numbered and you'll see what I'm talking about with the spring

I got it...thanks for the help... I lost the little spring though for the catch that moves in and out..It either broke or it flew somewhere that I cant see in the garage. All this crap made me pull the trigger on buying a new starter though (checked mine doesnt spin when you touch the posts with jumpers so I have to start with that and work my way backwards thru the cheaper parts)
This is more or less why I don't buy used vehicles. But itll be nice when shes back to 100%. Sucks that I cant ride it now until I get one of the two methods of starting fixed.

did you put the drive housing spring clip in the right place, or how tight do you have the lock nut on the drum sheave, can make a difference
