250sx kick starter problem

i just did a complete tear down and reasemble on the motor and when i got it all back togeather the kick starter kicks down but wont return to the upright position i put a new spring and thrust washers on it and put it back togeather again and its still not returning back to the right position any ideas my knee is messed up from while i was in the army so im goin to be ussing electric start any ways should i just leave it as it is or keep trying to find the issue ? if i am not kicking it will it hurt anything to leave it as it is and just use the electric start im lost any help is greatly appreciated sorry for the grammer i am not good at it.

sounds like the you didnt put the proper tension on the spring I say this because I've been there.

when i just sit the side cover on the engine and just loosely put the bolts in it kicks ok and returns but when i tighten the bolts on the side cover to 11ft. pounds it kicks but wont return it almost acts like when its tightend down the its maybe flexing the cover and pinching the kicker but its possible its not enough tension on the spring i honestly dont know if its the tension how do i get more cause when i kick it without the cover on it comes back just fine and with the cover loose it also comes back just fine its only sticking when the cover is bolted on
