View Full Version : Gas Leaking, looking for direction...

Hi There. I've been lurking for a few months...never posted. I'm looking for a little direction here. I'd like to use this breakdown to learn more about how my trike works, etc. This is not a "HELP! What's wrong?!" post...but more of a "nudge me as I learn" post

I bought a pretty rough 84 200ES to ride around grandmas property. (Bought my boy a 83 110 as well...what have we been missing all these years!?) Changed the oil when I got it, etc. Ran great...tooled around for a while. Maybe 10 hours over 5 trips. Last time, I rode for a hundred yards and it stopped cold. Well...it puttered down as if I had turned the key off...didn't seize up or anything.

Looking around, I now see gas leaking quite profusely when I turn the gas shutoff valve on. When I crank it, gas pours out of the bottom and side holes on the carb. If I leave the gas valve on, perhaps a 1/2 cup per minute. If I am cranking or running it, double that.

While exploring, I removed and replaced the plug... the trike starts up now, but gas still pours out, and it runs terrible (very rough, _lots_ of smoke, etc.)

I was thinking I would remove the gas shutoff valve, fuel filter and carb. Perhaps buy a rebuild kit for the carb, and new o-rings wherever I can find them. I'm no stranger to mechanical work (using a manual...fixing car problems, etc)...but a complete stranger to this type of motor.

I'm confused about hoses too. I see some old hoses held to the frame of the trike in various places...but it seems none are actually connected! Ha. I took samples and bought new hoses. Since I'm asking about fuel system stuff...what hoses should be in place for the fuel valve, filter and carb?

I've be reading the World Class help post (wow, what a trove!) and the shop manual and will continue to do so...it just gets a bit overwhelming. If anyone has any tips as I dive in, I'd love to hear them.

Your on the right track with the carb rebuild. Sounds like you may have a stuck float. Those carbs are pretty simple, just dissasemble it slowly, lay it all out and clean every part. might not even have to buy a kit if your gaskets are still good.

Welcome to the site.

Thanks, Slingblade...I'll start removing parts and see what I see...

Got it done. Cleaned the carb out...there was a fair amount of gunk in there. Looks pretty nice now. I could see that that float pin was getting stuck sometimes as I played with it. Moves nicely now. I got a bunch of grease off the a lot of the engine and body as well while I was at it. Turns out my choke cable wasn't even attached. Ha. Looks much better, and runs great. Ordering a few parts that I noticed were missing too. 2 of the air box screws, new air filter, some new hoses, etc. Thanks for encouragement, Slingblade.

Best way to clean the needle and seat.. toothpast and a q-tip, stick it in there like your trying to lap it, spin it in a circle - incase if ever has a stuck needle :-p

I don't know how old you are, but i can tell you.. You're son isn't going to miss out :-p
