Did I hear you correctly..you live in the US and somehow own a 1987 Big Red? I thought the government ban took place before the US release..

I was recently told the NOS engine I have is 1987, but I thought they didn't exist in the US, just a few that came from Canada before the government here also banned them..

Do I have my history correct? How many 1987s exist there?

I'm new to don't mind all the questions...

There are several 87 models. I have a 87 Big Red as well. Honda released 87 200x, 250sx, 250es, 125m. Kawasaki released the Tecate 250 in 87 as well.

I found an orig owner 87 BR ( I think they made 4,000 +) but not sure if that number is worldwide or usa.
THAT one is chained to my concrete floor.

I have a handful of 85 model sx and br , but haven't really dug into the differences.
Starter gear assemblies look different from the outside but all these machines just feel different.
Even identical models/years.

Someone surely knows the actual differences.

What I don't see is very many 86 model years.
say, over the last year for sale? 30-40 1985 models to ONE 1986 but I know they made a ton of them.

You might be able to search for 'production numbers'.

Well I have an 85 that needs some help, so if some of you guys that have a barn full of parts want to get rid of anything I might be interested.

Rear brake assemblies are different from 85 to 86, I believe the axle is different too.

oh yeah, I forgot.

The waterproofing of the rear axles and differential is Much weaker on the 85 models.

Diffs weaker in what respect 'drjoe'? I haven't seem much chatter about this..

I have no issue that I am aware with my 85, but is there something I should look for as a preventative beside diffrential oil change?

oops, sorry.

The 85 years had problems keeping water out of the rear axles/differentials and the 86 87 are better sealed.

I run my 85 models thru the water all the time. I have no choice but to go thru a creek but I don't 'soak' them, I just run thru the creek.

I check and change my differential oil all the time and never noticed water in there.

If you're going to buy one, it's the first thing I would check. No fun to take them apart because of water damage.

If your diff oil doesn't look like chocolate milk, you're probably good forever.

There's only 3 point 3 ounces of 80 wt hypoid gear oil in there so like 1/2 a coffee cup and costs virtually nothing to change it.

You couldn't pick up a tumbleweed for $50 around here, let alone a 3 wheeler. Damn nice find.

The 85-86 differences are all in the book. Completly different rear end is the main difference.
The 87 has a different cam chain tensioner.
