Some of you have already seen the bike that I pulled out of a West Illinois farm field. Well I really didn't know what to do with the bike, but I got what I think was a good deal and I couldn't bring myself to part it out so I decided to give it a little make over.

The original plan was to just give it a good ole whores bath, fix a few things, and call it good.

Well that lasted all of about a day and one part after another it was down to a bare frame and off to the powdercoater , where it is as we speak.

Here are the beginning stages of the build. It will have every bearing on the bike new, new fenders, Mosh OEM seat, New complete bolt kit, and every part that is not new will either be painted or powdercoated. I'll update it as I go along.

The Day I brought it home.

Looking good to me! Are you going with a custom look, or stock colors?

All stock colors. There will be some difference here and there and by no means will be a 100% oem correct deal. It will just be a really nice bike when done, but not so nice to where you wouldn't want to ride it.

I know you just have the swingarm on for our viewing pleasure,, thanks. But don't forget the chain slider before you tighten it up. I did that once. Had the whole dang bike together, went to put the chain on,, and ,, aw crap.

Thank you. The swinger was just layed inside the frame for the pic. The bearings weren't half as bad as getting the axle out. I just put fresh bearings in the swinger tonight and remembered to put the chain slider on because I almost forgot that part.

Well I got a little done on the X. Its really been nerve racking trying not to damage any of the new Powder. My wife is about to kill me with all of the little parts that are being cleaned in the sink. I told her to take a chill pill, some guys build them on the kitchen table so shut it (I then ran out into the garage quickly).

Here are the swinger and shock installed!

Well nothing to get really excited about, but it is taking on the shape of a bike somewhat. I got the All Balls tapered bearings installed along with the rear carrier and axle assembly. The axle looks really nice with all of the new OEM hardware. If I had it to do all over again I would have had the axle prepped much better to remove all of the imperfections before powder coating.

Hey now we're getting somewhere. Well after successfully removing a broken exhaust stud, I got the engine in and all buttoned down. Try as I might even with using a whole roll of painters tape to protect the frame I managed to nick the powder wrestling the 100lb pig into it. Pissed me off but I got over it. It's in a tight spot so unless you knew it was there you probably wouldn't notice it. I got the oil cooler all mounted up also.

Yeah I didn't care for the spec bolt kit. It is pretty much just a replace them as you go type deal. This kit is labeled for each piece, however there are a couple issues I have ran into with the Fastener Guy Kit. There are no bolts for the bearing carrier pinch, and no bolt for the lower chain guide. The shock bolts are also not right, some were too long or they just didn't feel right threading in, so I just reused oem on those area's. Overall though I would buy the kit again in a heart beat.

That's a damn good idea. Now you wanna now the kick in the butt, I have a roll of that stuff hanging on the wall behind the bike and it never crossed my mind. But I'll be redoing my "R" soon so it will come in good use. Thanks for the tip.

hey where did you get the CARQUEST barrel at?

Dumpster Diving. I was at work and there was an old Carquest store that was closing down. They had a roll-off dumpster out side and you wouldn't believe what they were throwing away. All new rolls of 5/8, 1/2 heater hose, a two metal pull out drawer of electrical connectors, full to the top, A complete Edelman organizer of Brass fittings and vacum T's, 50' of 1 1/2 hydraulic hose roll, tube after tube of new in the package RTV sealant, and lots more little stuff. There was so much stuff I was Pack Rat drunk. I wish I could have taken it all but I was pressed for time and only got the above stuff and some more little stuff.

Well its not much farther but I set the tank on there along with the handle bars. The carb, airbox, and tubes are on right now, but they will have to come back off so I can stretch out the intake boot. I think the red tank looks sweet, but I'm not digging the old school dull super scoops. I might but a new set of shiny ones or try and find a nice set of OEM's.

Well its getting closer. I got a lot of the small things buttoned up last night. Foot pegs with new oem hardware, rebuilt the rear caliper and got it on, rear hubs are on, all of the controls on the handle bars are on and ready to go, and I got the tank mounted along with the shrouds. Now I'm just waiting on parts.

Well its on its feet now. I got the forks rebuilt and new oem fork boots installed. Got 'em up in the triples and the front wheel on. I also got the rear brakes buttoned up, now I just need to bleed them. I am really regretting going with the red rear spring. I don't like the way it flows wit the front boots. Pay no attention to the rear tires they are just for rolling. I have a really nice pair of old school Shredders for the rear.

04-24-2011, 07:29 AM
Yeah its killing me. Once i get the exhaust on and some oil in it , I'm going to fire it up and keep my finger crossed. Everything as far as controls and gas tank go, were in such bad shape when I got it, I could only run it for a few minutes, so I never did get to test the clutch or run it long enough to see what kind of power it had. But while it ran it did sound good so I am taking a chance. I'm really putting the cart before the horses on this one and keeping my fingers crossed that it will run as good as it looks.

I don't believe the bike was run hard while it was owned by the guy I got it from, I just think it was neglected. He showed me a pic of it when he got it and it was a very nice one owner bike. He rode it for a year, wrecked it and tore the fenders all to hell and it sat outside for about four more years. I guess we'll soon see if I'm correct.

Thanks to everyone for the positive support and the great deals on parts. Its really been fun posting in this thread.

Well the rear fenders have finally showed up after being on back order for over a month. And I'm not real thrilled with the color match to say the least. I know that Maier color match leaves a lot to be desired some times so I don't know why I am surprised. I would really of like to find a set of OEM's for this build but they were just to expensive for a decent pair. In the sun it looks like they have a slight pink tint to them. Now I just have to wait for my Mosh seat cover a a few other little odds and ends. I also got the exhaust on and a big thanks to Cattle Dog for the smoking deal on it. It looks awesome.

I hear ya. I tell you what, when I get it going I'll make you a hell of a deal on it then you can put oe tires, tank and plastic on it.

I just picked up a Metric Shitte Ton of parts today including a complete running '86 with oe plastic that has been painted but no cracks what so ever. I might just try and refinish them myself and see how they turn out. The tank is not rusted but it has dents and I am in no way shape or form any type of body man.

Thanks fella's. Tim, I have a '86 front wheel that's gonna match the rears and as far as the boots go I don't think there is a boot out there that can match the looks and fit of the OEM ones so until someone make a comparable set I'll stick with the blue.

pcollins: I paid $200 to have the frame , axle, and swinger stripped and coated. To me that was a no brainer.

I don't blame you, the OEM blues look great, maybe you can just have the red rear re-done in blue powder coat as you were thinking it wasn't powder coated in the red anyway? I like the 86 rims, glad to hear you have the front too! Hard to come by any that aren't dinged up around here! Looking forward to final photos!!!

Well I finally got a couple minutes of free time and buttoned up a few odds and ends. I had to remove the axle so I could get the rear sprocket bolts in past the billet carrier, put on the chain and front sprocket, cleaned and installed the petcock, new fuel line, and filled it with oil.

Poured a splash of gas in it and hit the choke. Third kick it fired right up and sounded great. No smoke, noises or ticks. I took it for a little ride up the street and the clutch felt great and it ran butter smooth. The only problem is it wants to idle funny when it warms up. I have been fighting that and the smell of the fresh paint and finger prints burning off when it gets hot.

Now I just have to wait to install my seat cover which is on its way as we speak and put the Shredder tires on the rear rims, install the front brake hose and finish bleeding the rear brakes, and she is ready to go I think.

Nice x. That paint on the motor makes it look new and fresh, i hope it dont all burn off. Im still stuck at the rear sprocket bolts on my x. The ones i got from mcmaster were just a tad smaller than the stock ones in diameter. I was afraid that they would shear off and send my chain through my case. I was wondering if you were still willing to part with a set for an '86. just let me know what you need to get for them.

The set I have looks like the allen part is a little wollered out from someone probably using the wrong size wrench, but they should work fine. If you want to pay for shipping you can have them.

Looks great, if you don't want to go to all the trouble of redoing the red spring,, I would go with a set of aftermarket red fork boots. I have them on one of my Xs and they look great, and that will look good with that red spring.

I think I'm gonna leave it as is and let the next guy worry about that.

Honda still sells those sprocket bolts, they are pretty pricey though. I got mine at a local hardware store when i first put mine together. I have since gotten the proper ones for it....

The bolts are discontinued, trust me I looked. I had to try and find a set and got lucky with a parts bike I bought it was an '86.

Well she's pretty much done. I got the seat cover on late last night and got it mounted to the fenders. Next time I will let Mrs. Mosh do my seats. She did a great job on the cover and also got me new foam.

Last week I got all the brakes on and bled, oil changed and drain plug fixed, skid plates cleaned up and on. Now I just need to swap out the rear tires for my shredders I have on the shelf and she is ready to go. I'll admire it for a while and then it will be someone else turn to enjoy it. My '86 R deserves nothing but the utmost attention and in order for that to happen the X has to go.

I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed bringing it to you.
