I'm 100% Uni. They will flow more air then a factory foam filter and still keep the dirt and dust out. I run a Uni filter without an airbox lid. K&Ns on the other hand flow just as well if not better BUT I would reccomend an outerwear or a prefilter if you decide not to run a lid.
As far as drilling holes in the lid, I wouldn't recommend it. Reason being, parts are getting harder to find and if for some reason you decide to run the lid again, it won't look badgered up with tape covering the holes.

the guy i bought it from put several pretty big holes in the airbox lid.....im talking about the cone shaped uni filter with outerware or panty hose around it (i heard that keeps more dust off the filter) but running it like that directly on the carb or running the airbox with a regular unifilter.....so box or no box...what is better for performance?

i'm all uni also. cheaper, and easier to service. just wash with a mild soap , air dry, and add oil. i use uni oil mainly because it doesn't cost me anything. k&n for my truck but uni for my trike.

so im getting a uni for my trike........i asked the question wrong.......im getting a k&n STYLE uni filter its a uni filter but the kind where you just hook it up to the carb......not the one for inside the airbox......so what im asking is, what is better? running my airfilter and box that i had or getting a uni filter that hooke on to my carb? and if so am i going to have to jet or anything? how do i jet the carb?

I vote airbox. It's going to keep alot of mud and water of your filter. An open airbox I think is a better advantage because, it helps streamline the air into the carb.
Performance difference between the two......marginal.....

Keep the airbox unless your look for top hp. Duners, draggers, and mx/tt racers can go without the box unless mud and water is in the forcast. its PIA when the filter get wet no matter what.
