I have a 85 250r with esr full pipe, k&n air filter,v force 3 reeds, and dyne jet kit, and it will not hit the power band! No matter wat! I just got it a few weeks ago, but could it be the jet kit? It bogs right wen it starts to hit, it goes through all gears fine

Ya and it runs fine and starts quick too. Any ideas on the peob? Jetting?

I think you answered your own question. Sounds lean to me.

Is it choking on itself or cutting out? How much smoke is coming out the back?

Yes it is, but once it does if I shift up it goes fine till it starts to hit the power band

It does choke and sputter and is running rich, and it has a brand new spark plug

Post some picture to see what it has first!

You'll need to tell us all details of the motor, compression test need
To be done.

Alrite, it runs 130 psi

On my 86 keep in mind its got a different carb than yours but at 30 deg air temp I put on a full esr and have reeds too I went from a stock pipe and jetting 142 main and 42 pilot up to 154 main and a 50 pilot and raised the needle 1 notch richer. I runs good and didn't do a plug chop cuz I had no where to do it in town but it seemed ok. I run 91 octane and 32-1 klots and need a piston I got 145 psi. Not all gauges read the same either alot of times. I'm in WI so our elevation is the same.

seemed to me like it was a bit rich not lean. try lowring your main. what size your runnig now

When asking running questions here is a few things to consider.

What size and type of carb?
What is the pilot and main jet sizes in that carb and needle clip position?

If you are running a stock 85 carb, then IMO throw it at a stray animal that gets in your trash cans...Get a 86 carb, or even better yet a PWK 38.
Have you tested the coil?
What spark plug are you running and at what gap?

130PSI compression? TOO LOW. Start there first..Make sure you have a good compression tester.

Well it's stock and I got it from a kid tht put all the stuff on including jetting it... It is stock carb because it is a round slide, and I did have a bad tester,, it's at 155 psi... So wat should I check first? Snd I'm in central illionois

And the plug gap looks rele small could tht be a problem?

search the threads for free manuals and download one for plug gap. also sounds like jetting or coil if its not getting a good hot spark.
Also Mosh had good points as well

could the dyno jet kit be a problem? wat is it exactly? and wat is plug chopping?

If you look at the Honda service manual
It states 170psi minimum, your well below that.

Now keep in mind you can still run it as is, but you risk
The chance of ruining your bottom end If the piston let's go!

If it was my R I would rebuild the top end.

If you can I would up grade your carb to a Keihin PWK 38mm
Carbuator...

As ceaserthethird stated, your well below the "minimum" compression specs. i wouldn't even try messing with anything else untill you get that resolved. It'll run, but not well like it should. Right now it could be as simple as new rings, but if you wait and keep running it things could get alot worse quickly.

Well it is not gonna run very well at that low of a compression even if it is jetted correctly.

You asked a question - people give you advise - and then you disregard it! I guess your board name fits you well!

85 Stock carbs are a POS IMO.
But before you go buying a new carb do these things first.

Swap your coil from your 86 to your 85 See if it runs better.
Remove your airbox lid and see if it wants to rev better. If so, you are jetted too rich.
If those items dont work, remove your stator cover and check if your flywheel pickup and sensor are rusty and dirty. If so clean them up with steel wool and set the sensor gap at .017''.
There is a raised block on your flywheel that passes by the sensor. That is where you check your pick-up gap.
Lastly, swap your carb from your 86 to your 85.
You have known good items to test with so you dont go spending money on stuff you dont need. Use that to your advantage.

No matter what..In the end, you will still need a top end job with compression at 155.

Thank u all! U have been a great help! But will a 85 350x coil work? And the 86 is a friend not mine..
