me and a friend rebuilt my honda 200es with new rings it smoked horribly when i got it so we put in new rings. I brought the jug and piston to a shop and they measured it read out to stock so i got stock rings, the wrist pen was slightly worn diffrent on one side the shop owner said it looked like a bent rod, But he proceeded to tell me he will charge me 800+ for a rebuild so i figured he was just bsing me. The piston and bore looked mint, no scratches or anything but the thing is smoking it started right when we cranked it the first time. It smoked more when its first canked then when it warms up it clears up some. I bought a brand new oem wrist pen as well as rings + a xl200r cam for a lil more power. Its not severe smoke its about as much smoke as a 2 stroke. So i want to do a compression test on it. Which compression tester would work from autozone

I was originally going to bring it to a shop to see if they will do it until i realised autozone rents them. Ive never done one before so i really dont know which one will work on the 200 engine.

Thats kinda high, I guess if its coverd under their rental tools i could go for it. What size is the 200 spark plug hole? I was looking at this one

if you've replaced rings and it still smokes, esp. on start-up, but goes away once it warms up, you might try replacing the valve guide seals but that requires pulling the head off I'm pretty sure.

Yea it smokes horribly on startup, but after running it, it clears up, not completly but a pretty good bit. The head that came on my big red was shot so we put a head off a trx200. The head looked really good but the bike it came off had set up for years. I will see what this compression test says. I was hoping after running it for a while it would clear up but so far it hasnt. Im going to take it out friday and run it a good bit and see how it does. Just running it around my yard it has good power but the startup smoke is pretty bad. I put some no smoke in it but it really didnt help at all.
If the compression reads good would that most likely mean the valve seals? or would that give me a off reading on compression?

I just got a 200x 3 days ago, and it smokes BAD, BAD, BAD! But it has 135psi compression. It also has pretty bad piston slap for a 4 stroke. I wonder if all that oil on mine is coming from the valve guide seals, or if its a busted oil ring. A guy at work says I could just apply shop air to the cyl, and pull the valve springs and swap out the seals. Dont know.

This is the one I have from AutoZone and it has adapters to fit just about any spark plug hole. It works in my 250R, 200X, 350X, and multiple vintage Jap bikes. Great tool for a good price.
