You have to give us more information. Better for trail riding? What do you mean? More low end? More comfort? Better stability?

go to a bigger sprocket on the rear (up 2 teeth), probably a heavier "fox" shock depending on your weight

put a hotcam in it, fmf slip on pipe, and add a couple tooth larger rear sprocket. it will run a little faster than the 4 stoke 125's. ( I had a 2001 xr100r I modded this way, was great) you can also do a flatside carb off the yamaha ttr125 (BBR) and this gives it a little oomph too.
