Hey guys! I recently discovered that my 70 has a sheared flywheel key. Found new key, fits fine... BUT....The flywheel won't go on all the way and is off-kilter. I'm afraid to force it but I've triple checked all the clearances and it still won't go on all the way.

Any ideas at all?! I'm at a total loss! :(

The new key is probably popping up on one end, woodruff keys tend to do that.

You may have to make sure there are no burrs and get that key in there solid and flat before the flywheel goes on.

The flywheel key way itself may have got buggered up and need a bit of filing; But don't force it on with the nut.

Thanks Dirtcrasher, I appreciate it. Do you think I could use a little JB Weld to hold the key into place?

Rule #1 - Never force anything......

Is that how the threads got stripped?? It should go on smooth with and without the key in place.

Not sure if a die will help you, I use a metric thread file allot.

Nope, the threads were stripped when I got it, that's the main reason it was slipping. The flywheel goes on fine without the key, but with it it stops about 3/4 of the way on. I tried about 3 different keys, but I had to shave them myself but I spec'd it all out with veneers and it should fit fine.

The 85 70 I just bought had the threads stripped off the shaft. I just re-threaded the shaft 2 nights ago with a die. Used a M10 die and a new nut. The threads came out nice. Make sure there isnt something hanging the flywheel shaft up in the back, like the wire from the points or a wire off of the stator.
